" Tha present system, under which tho wholo of .tk< monoy for buildings was found'by the Government, was unsatisfactory, m that thoro was no iiieentivo to boards to practise economy, whilst the Department, in tlie absence of icports of its own, was not in an advantageous position to judge tho merits of different applications. Ho suggested that tho timo will probably come whon a system of defraying tho cost of school buildings by local contributions would be seriously considered, THE POLICE COMMISSION. EXPLANATION BY MR. BISHOP. Dunetfln, July 5, With roforencoto the scope of the Polico Commission, Mr. Bishop informed a reporter to-night that although ho -was prohibited from inquiring into tho immediate cirenmstanoes leading to tho dismissal of any bora, he hold that ho-was entitled to inquiries as tp how these men obtained admission to the force, and their career while in it. Samuol Jackson M'Koc, manager of Ryan Bros., was charged at/ the' Magistrate's Court to-day witli having sent to a woman a document likely to be believed tb have boon issued by the authority 'of a Court. It Was stated by the polico that tho document had loceived tho person who received it. as money was sent to Court to ; pay a debt which was a balance amounting to 17s. As this was tho first case of tho kind to como ' before tho Court here, Mr. M'Carthy, S.M., said that only a small penalty would bo.im|X)sod. Defendant was fined 10s., wih costa - ~ 15s. ON A LEE SHORE. AN EXCITING TOW. Auckland, July 6. Tho steamer Awaroa, which left Kaipara for Auckland, towing-the brigantino Dofianco, encountered a gale, of hurricane force on Friday morning. Sho was, helpless, rolling in the trough of the sea,, and both vessels were being driven ashore. Therefore tho • hawser had to bo slipped, leaving tho. Defiance to her own resources. After sheltering at Motupia, tho Awaroa' reached Auckland yesterday. The Defiance. had a good spread of canvas, and was well provisioned. It was expected that' she would get clear of the danger safely. SUPREME COURT SITTINCS. Wostpo'rt, July 5. The first sitting of tho Supremo Court at Wcstport took place to-day, Mr; Justico Cooper presiding. In -a ' perjury charge against Airs. O'Brien, no bill was returned. Poter Cummins, charged with an olionco against ■& girl, was, found guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy. ■ Tho Judgo stated that, bo would havo the Probation Officer's report in tho morning, and, if it wore favourable,' ho would consider the- recommendation, but not otherwise. HOME FOR INEBRIATES. Auckland, July 5. Plans have been prepaiod by tho Salvation Army for a new' Homo for Male Inebriates at Ruthcs Island, in tho Hauraki Gulf. Pakatoa Islaud, where tho present Inebriates' Homo is situated, is to bo used for females only, as soon as the Ruthos Island,arrangements are complete. DWELLING DESTROYED. Croymeuth, July'S. A fire this morning destroyed „a six-robmod dwelling and its contents, belonging to Mr. George Cooper. Tho origin is unknown. Tho inmates had a narrow escape. The insurances wore £300 on tho houso. and £100 oa tho furniture, in tho Atlas Office. NEWS IN BRIEF. ' Napier, July a. Mr, Justice Chapman, at the Supremo Court to-day, heard an appeal in the case Paikor and Johnston v. Alfred Dillon, a claim for commission on tho sale of defendant's wool clip, in which case the Magistrate gave judgment for Dillon. Tho plaintiffs wore authorised to boo if they could get a oortain price, and thoy claimed that the clip was subsequently sold to clients introduced by them and at a price stated. Judgment v was reserved. Ounodlfi, July 3. Tho athletic bodies of Dunedin have decided to sond M'Knight with tho New Zealand team to Brisbane, to compete in tho three-mile championship and Marathon race, it being 'felt that on recent performances ho' would make a valuable addition to tho team.
