In crossing the Strait from Picton to Wellington on Tuesday night, the Takapuna experienced a very rough trip, and took nearly two hours longer than usual on tho. run. She left Picton at 8.30 p.m., nndv experienced smooth water until: clearing Tory Ohnjinel about ten o'clock, but she then ran into a howling south-1 erly gale that had by that time raised tremend-1 oua Boas. The continual wash of great waves on her starboard quarter caused her to roll and pitch in a manner that made matters decidedly uncomfortable. Tho full force of the g»lo was encountered in -'mid-strait, and one mighty wave hit the vessel with 6uch force that it' wrenched away two ventilators on the afterI deck, burst in part of tho saloon skylight, and let a quantity of water into the saloon. Thero I were a fairly large numbor of passengers on board, including members of the Pollard's Opera Company, who wore returning from Nelson.
