Assistance .was secured, from' tho ; camp,' and; a; message' ,was then sent' to' tho doctor through the telephone to Mangaroa.A track had,to bo cut through the .scrub to tbocamp a quar-! ter 'of a mite away, and, ~by tho tamo tho injured niari. had; been'oonyejed'thither, Dr.. ,G. Hamilton Rowlands arrived, having,'traversed the ten miles of lexoeedingly bad road in an hour and a half; Chloroform was administered, and', examination revealed a scalp. wound seven inches long and l a compound dbprosscd fracture of the skull, tho bono being driven into the brain substance/ Dr. Rowlacdß performed a- difficult , by candle-light, not oven a lamp being obtainable. • ■ . ■ ■ ■ / The; following . morning Dr. Rowlands bad l Gilmoro • removed to his own 'residenoo at Mangaroa by hand-litter, the roads boing impassable to vehicles, A largo party of Tatu settlers met, and undertook the laborious task of oonveyrng Gilmoro : to Mangaroa' through the (ten miles of bog and quagmire, that Berve: for ' roads in the dis--1 .trict. A party from Mangaroa met them,, and, shared tie fatigue of ' carrying iie stretcher, and tho doctor'B house wm reached in sis hours. Gilmoro boro tho journey well, and was quite, conscious at the end of it. Tho latest news to hand is to, the. effect that ho is progressing satisfactorily, and there is every hopo of His recovory. Some time ago two. brothers named Macalister disappeared., They, weire last soon in a small boat on the Thames ,River, rowing past ,tho . place, where they wore employed. :The boat and.oars were subsequently found, and this morning the body of one of the m'eii was found near Kopu, confirming ,tho ' belief that, both brothers fell-into tho water and were drowned.
