: A'lmeeting of: draughts players was'held last night at tho Workingmen's Club, the president of. tho club. (Mr. .Carniich'ael)'. occupying tho ohair. .Ho announced that the following eight entries; had been received for the tourney to decide the draughts championship of "Wellington J. .Leggatt, ■ A.': Moulton, J as/ M'Kenzie, J. i Beck;; Francis'«R-eilly,' G.. Eeid- (Wellington), P. M'Pherson (WadestoWn), and J. Darby (Petone). Later, Mr. Beck, who has played: with distinction against; the .world's champion, Mr. Jordan,, stated that .lie would lie unable to compete, as ho has to leave for tho south. ' Mr.'.Cairn\ieba«l said ;that tho club would bo jileasod- to place ■ its, chess; and draughts' room at ,'the disposal of plSyers," and also would bo prepared to' give a liberal, donation.'towards the funds for sending, tho, winner of the championship'''to ' compete .'for . tho "Australasian Draughts Championship; to be decided'at Brisbane during tho Queensland Carnival >in August.'- v. .v ,t ; It was decided to comnicnco play on Friday evening, and to invito all enthusiast's tci, witness thegamss.' Mr. Coulter was appointed.riforce, and Orr, J. Keid, anu Coulter.'were appointed time-keepars. , . •At :tho conclusion of tho meeting the competitors met to decide details of play. It was resolved, that , the .tourney: be held on what; is known as- tho- two-life : knock-out., system, ; and that four games, be played to dccido: each pairing..' Tho rules to.be those laid down in Loos' Guide. , Games will be played on four nights ,in tho. week; no game \to .start 'after 10.80, players to bo ready for play at 1.. From the enthusiasm with' which the matter- was taken lip,' tho tourney gives every promiso of being a success.
