k'V" a: OPENED YESTERDAY. • The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y.M.O.A. is [ making, a great effort to raise" a largo sum this .week, towards clearing off the debt that ;sti]l remains on the buikiliig,' : aud they are now holding a big bazaar : .'at, the .YiM.C.A. :rooms;.■:Mrs.': St' A. •' I "\Villib.Tiis-'' i has' offered to give £250 towards the .debt reduction, if .the proceeds of ;the bazaar reach ' the rsamo 'amount, but, if they fall under £250, ;it; is understood that sho' donates nothing, and it will how very eager the ladies 'are to reach that sum.
The bazaar was opened yesterday afternoon by Mr. J. ■G.' W. Aitken, President of the Y.M.C.A.,." who,. in ' tho course; of his ' remarks, lof erred' to. tho splendid v/ork -aceoniphshed in ■ the past by the Ladies' -'Auxiliary, and compliraeutedjthem on their Veffoijts to' further reduce..-the!-incumbrance ,ofir : j£SCOO which still , stwd\ to ' th© debit .'of Hie institution. 1 ■ .: There ..w'as -.a.-' crowded .gathering in - the afternoon . arid evening,' /and the - results/ .of :the first day's proceedings must be regarded •as very satisfactory;. Altogether, £100 has been collected, arid, as' mentioned, ; th 6 desire is to increase this by another £150. - \ The big Y.M.U.A. buildings -afford .plenty of scope for a bazaar,'with various attractions. Downstairs, in the gymnasium, last .light, an interested group- of. 1 spectators watched from'tho gallery; while a vigorous ,-game of basket-ball was- played.: In the j.main hall nn orchestra, played several selccI tions, end, in- tho roonis opening' off the landing - upstairs} -■ were; different side-shows. ■The i bazaar Sproper was' held' in.'the' big 'hallj i n J £ ' r ® a number.. of stalls were: ranged round.the walls, all- of them: decorated according ,tb: some' - individual design—one gay .with : huge.' yellow,, sunflowers-; -another draped 'elaborately'; with, white mid yellow'' muslin; A third—the ; *'il6wer stiillj - arranged with a light .archway; -twined 'with ' green and necoratcil,_,with- pajms; and still another hung I about , w-ith ; vivid , coloured flags of ■: vivid colours..'
