HARBOUR RECLAMATION.
PETONE VIEWS. - '■ The, Harbour Board forwarded the report on reclamation of. the foreshore at Pewne, dealt with last Thursday, ;to ~ tho Petone Borough Council. The matter-came, up at Monday riight's_ meeting of,'the.latter body. ■. . Councillor Short moved that tho board be thanked for tho report, and that the Mayor (Mr. M'Ewau) bo also tuanked .for the manner he. had :placed ;the, matter before the board. In doing:so; he said,'it; fully boro out the, contention Jio had always held, that reclamation at Potone could, bo dono far chcaper than at any; other ;part of .the district; .The fact was that, taking it, on an acreage basis, tho cost would be about £3000, as compared with £5000 at. Evans Bay! ■ Ho did not anticipate that, any scheriie would be carried out for - some considerable time, but the report fully Exemplified the fact" that if -any large scheme is to be undertaken, it must be undertaken at Petone.' The Harbour Board, now, or ten years hence, : could not overlook Petone. Moreover, on top of the cost of the Evans Bay, scheme,- a sum of at least £200,000 would have to be. spent in connecting it with the railway system. . ■ . The .Mayor largely, endorsed. Councillor Short's remarks. Ho was not at all sanguine that the-board would. undertake the .work for some time. .Although tho report was not received;..well- by certain members of the board, it showed that the cost of reclamation at Potono was less than at Evans Bay. "The motion was carried. > . •
