Christohurch, Juno 29; The' criticism aroused by tho Minister's ex-ercise-of : his right of veto in the recent railway appeal cases was referred to in the .course of, an interview with the Minister for Railways to-day, and Mr. Millar .made a .brief; statement, regarding. the; attitude which he took.-up, ..';"My position; as-far as 'the Appeal-Board is concerned," :he said, "is that I'have no desire to exerciEe the power of'veto 'except in cases where the Appeal Board-goes outside' the powers conferred on it. Ono decision of tho board, if given effect to,would have meant an estimated increase of £80,000 per. annum in expenditure, and it. was in direct contradiction to a judgment already given by the; North Island Appeal, Board. . Under: these ciretim s t-ances I - vetoed the'"recommendation. ;• That.was'about the only case in which I exercised'my power of veto. ; There was' ono other where:.a recommendation' was ; mad» which I . could not givojcffec't to in the interests of the public' safety." ■ , ,
