CAPTURED BY CHINESE
THE AUCKLAND: LAUNDRY BUSINESS. (By Correspondent.) , T 'V ';V.. - - Auckland, June 28. In Auckland, so great has been the growth of Chinese laundries during 'the past five years, that they have more than quadrupled withinthat time, ( and: now outnumber those. which are being carried on by Europeans Tho total-number of Chineae laundries, registered, as carrying . on business in and around the city, on March 31 last, was 37. as against 32 being' worked by Europeans, beeing that there are three steam laundries employing,about.,l3o hands, included'in the latter total, it would .seem that the wily Chinese has not captured tho. whole of the business yet,; but, from inquiries made by a reporter, it would seem that ho is on a fair'way to doing so; .'. • . - Of the 32 European laundries registered the major portion are being carried on 6y one woman only, who, because ehe takes inylflundry ;work, in , order to enable her to eke out a bareexistenco, is obliged to regispremises as a factory. This practically only leaves! the three steam laundries competing i with the 37 Chinese establishmonts, and it seems that thev aro not making, headwjyagainst the industrious Chinese their. business, instead of having expanded in proportion to the increase of population being now no greater than it was two or three'years ago. ■ .
