For the past 6ix ; months, proceedings have •been taken for the recovery of overdue rates. There ..are still a. few 'absentee ratepayers, who .have not been sued! but proceedings are being taken against 'their properties, and sbveral cases are also in, the bands of the Registrar of tho 'Supremo Court to enforce payment "against the properties affected. In such cases, the'plaintiff has to wait. [Six months before.the Supremo Court can-be approached, and then wait.a like period beforea sale can be made. Of the total amount outstanding, £200 175.1 d. represents Native ra'tesj..which; oannbt' be collected, leaving a balance of'£3s3 13s. sd. Since March 31, £161 19s. has boon collected, leaving £191 14s. sd. ontstanding. Against this, it must be stateil.that over £40 is owing on the Hutt Park, so that; about £150 is overdue on an amount collectable of nearly £12,000. At the same, date, the amount owing tho Wellington City-Council .was just, a trifle under £10,000, while the amount overdue at Auckland was £210 only.
