ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
' Masterton, June 25. . > (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) An old and respected rendent of Mastert ton, Mr. Brown Hunt, was found dead in his \ house at Lansdowno this morning A revolver, loaded in foUr chambers, was found in 'his right hand, and there was a bullet wound in tho head. * Deceased was 76 years of age, and a widower, residing alone He Was last seen alive by a neighbour on Wednesday last. At tho inquest this afternoon, before Mr. W. P. James, S.M., a verdict or suicide wide temporarily insane was returned, Deceased was one of tho original settlors on.the Upper Plainj having gene to the Wairarapa from Hutt in 1853. Ho subsequently took up a Urge farm at Mikl Miki, where he prospered, and somo few years ago retired ~ . into private life. Deceased leaves a largo family of sons and daughters, one of tho latter being now a resident of the Hutt. For tho 'past two years Mr. Hunt had suffered ,from indifferent health. 1
A STAFF-SERGEANT-MAJOR'S DEATH. Invcrcarglll, June 25. ' Staff-Sergt -Major Taylor, of tho Otago Military District, who has been stationed 111 Invercargill _ for the lost three years, died ■suddenly this evening while reading a nowspaper at his homo. The cause of death is I supposed to be heart /aduje. Sergt-Major Taylor camo from Scotland to Otago about nine or ten years ago, and he was exceptionally popular with Volunteers. He was 40\ years or .ago. His regiment in the Imperial Army, was tho Scottish Rifles. ' A MINER DROWNED. ' Dunedln, June 25. Andrew Wilson, a minor, aged 40 years, was drowned in tho_ Waipon River near tho township this morning Deceased had been drinking previously The body has been recovered. ,AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE A'/man named Wm. Graham, of 36 Nelson Street, Petone, had an unpleasant experience yesterday evening while bidding farewell to some friends who wero leaving for Sydney by tho UlimaToa. Ho was standing on the edgo of the wharf engaged m conversation with those on tho steamer, when he lost his balance and fell into tho water between thp vessel and the wharf. Mr. Robert Darrooh, chief officer of tho Ulimeroa, and Constable Shaw immediately lowered a rope over tho side «f the vessel, and then Mr. Darroch made a descent to effect a rescue. Graham, being a swimmer, had meantime reached ono of the beams of the wharf, and in a few 11 minutes both he and tbo ship's officer wero I hauled up,to the wharf. Constable Shaw then conveyed the man to tho tolls office, where, after havm* a rub down and securing a chango of clothing, he was ablo to leave for homo.
