SCIENTIFIC DOG.
PRINCIPAL ACTOR IN A NOVEL EXPERIMENT. "James," the only "dog in Britain with a really scientific mind, was without doubt the great success of the exhibition hold by tho Koyal Society at Burlington House recently. Patiently, and with never a sigh of complaint,/"Jamea" stood with one of his fore feet and one of his back feet, and then, for tbo sake of' variety, with ■ his two fore-feet in two glass jars containing" salts, in solu; tion. From the, jars ran wires connecting with -Einthoven's string galvanometer. Upon a screen the movements of' a verticallino indicated the; beats of "James's" heart. '■James" is a true-bred British bulldog, in the best of training,; sound in wind ana limb. Had he been affected in the-heart tbo6e jerks would havo shown it. The faintest uncertainty in the boat would have been shown upon the screen. An inquirer, by taking "James's" feet out of the jars and placing his . two hands in, could see at onco tho' difference between the beat of a human heart and that of a dog. For an hoar in tho afternoon and again in tho evening "James" displayed his heartbeats to those who were interested. Men whose names are famous :in the scientific world came to see "James," asked how it was he stood, so still, and when they grew accustomed to his ratljer foarsome mouth called him "Jim" for short. "He is trained to it now, 'V said Dr. Walker, his owner, "and likes it. He.has done it fairly frpf quontly at'home, and quite understands what is ! required,of him."
