KARORI POST OFFICE—A REPLY.
T»n 'To ®i r i ,Ratoparer m his letter of June;. 12-would appear to have very 'misguided conceptions as to what constitutes the the position of its centre. In the .first place, although by natural .configuration, the,' Church Hill dill •■ i ? Ehlp mto two' parts, yet there are not therefor© two townships, and if your correspondent will, take a bird's-eye' 'new of •SwfcW Wlll see that;there' is not this , marked division which he • supposes. \ It ' t P rt r 180I 80 fr T' the writer's' remarks i t "at, what he terms," the older"township has 1 P, r °Si-«s of late years, while, a new towMhip, has been formed round .the part . known as. beAutifu] Karori. This is entirely and, what.is more, in the "old town- .. .dup.;; the amount of-building that has taken ptece during late years .must bo fully double tnat in the new township," and the present bwldug operations in the, former go to 1 support - this fact. • . 1 urvT' , c c °' T esponden l t . asks, the;; question: n mch of the two .townships is the more important from .a business and residential point of view, and, having decided this, is it likely to 'retain itsimportaucs? If' "Karori Eati> Eay i j er ?: on " to look " ah oad a little ho could not give such a narrow-minded answer to-this question. Hie proposed continuation ot) the. tramway, which is bound to come in the near future, will naturally cause closer settlement in Central and. Southern ■ Karori ( the .old . township"). Further inducements : this. are tte cncket, hockey, 'foot-' ?? d ',P uI ?! IC recreation grounds, together wrth the green and tennis courts, the council chambers, present post office, church, public school, etc. 1 ■■ " " ; _ .Yonr. correspondent is misrepresenting facts .when states that in the new township, there., are more stores than in the old. Wittan.the space he mentions,, lie tram terminus and the Anglican Church, there are B?yen shojis. In the old township there are six .places ;of business, with a new store in (xrarse. of .erection.. These include the two stores which supply practically the whole of the borough, and one of, which : does more business than : all the shops in the "new 1 township., jrat: together. . Further, land ralues. are just as. high in Central Karori as round the train terminus, and I venture t6 say that on the average' they are higher. 'As to climatic considerations, I can namo several ratepayers at present living in. Cen-tral-Karori who can prove that this portion of .the borough is. not so exposed to the cold winds, and is, in faction an average 3 degrees warmer than the "new township." and receives just, as much sunshine. Th a proposed site for.the post office is in the very oentre .of the.borough. There is, there, more land msen for; settlement than in the "new township, and 'it is; in' the centre and southern district that the population will flow and. is flowing. A post office situated nearer tho present terminus would serve onlv one . small end of the borough, and show a lack'of foresight and interest in the borough at large on the part of those who would sup-port,-such a proposal. If "Karori RaW payer had any objection to the . proposed site he should have used his influence' at. the public meeting railed to decide the matter. The fact that the majority voted in favour of 1 tho present proposed site shows, eithor that the .residents in the portion of the borough represented by "Karori Ratepayer" were satisfied therewith, or that there were not sufficient of them to carry their vote: and in the .latter case there can be no iust claim to having the site selected nearer the terminus. I am, etc., KARORI CENTRAL, ■: June 21; 1900. j
