Small fruit ' farms are, in many cases, being enlarged, and somo fanners are now giving up dairying and planting their land with fruit trees. - A fact not gonorally known in connection' with tho local fruit industry is that the pear"" is being extensively planted. Time was wlicn> ' tho principal fruit crop here was' poaclies. ' Pears, however, have a ready sale, both' in the,shops and for canning purposes, and this - ■ fnct is now well recognised. ■ Peaches,' ol course, nro still being extensively planted, tho demand being 'principally for tho following sorts:—HaVs Early, Brigßs's Red May, Saundors, and' Triumph, -all early; Wiggins, second early; Muny mid-season; ' ■ and Royal George, Royal Chwloito, and • Hobbs s Late, late. Apples- aro grown by a>largo number of farmers,,and are always ' surfc of a S-eady sale' 'Tho apple at present in largest demand is tho Doughertv, a handsome little rod applo, .five ,or b!x to the pound, and of good keeping quality. Plums , ■ ' are in very small demand, and'thcro appears to bo no particular variety to choose from. As showing tho oxtent of tho' fruit trtdo here, ono company last yoar put through 40,000 cases.- Another vendor sold 20,000 cases.
