Bates | has boon performing the duties'of Govern- | mont Meteorologist, forecasting tho weather I for all parts of the |Dominion, and collating I thoso records as to rainfall, wind, sunshine, temperatures, etc., which are of such valuo to tho man on tho land, tho mariner, and the hundred and oiio people whoso avocations are affected in orto way or another by tho weather. Captain Edwin retired,from the position at the end of March, nil till which timo Mr. Bates had acted'as his assistant. Wo are now in a position to aiinounco that Mr. Bates has been formally appointed to tho higher office. ' The Rev. Daniel Cross Bates, F.R.G.S., F.R.MiS., was born at Spalding, England, in 1863, and was educated nt tho Spalding Grammar and Salisburv Cathedral Schools, and St. Augustine's College, Canterbury. He was ordained a minister of the Church o(' England in 1891 > and served in New South Wales and England before being Appointed chaplain to the Ninth Contingent for South Africa. After roturnina from Africa, ho was forced to giro-up, Church work owing to illness, and ih 1903 entered the Civir Service, when he hocamo'connected with tho Motcorologicnl Office. On tho amalgamation of that offico with tlio Weather Bureau in December, 1906, ho became assistant to Captain Edwin, who Totired from tlie serviw on March 30 Mr. BaUe also activelj associated himself in tho work, of instituting the municipal "Zoo" at Newtown Park,
