POLICE CHARGES.
, ROYAL COMMISSION ORDERED. MR.'H.,W. BISHOP, 8.M., TO ACT. Cabinet decided on Saturday to recommend the Governor that Mr. H. W, Bishop, S.M., of Christchurch, bo appointed a Royal Commission to inquire into ,tho charges made in Parliament against .the .police force,' and'to make such further investigations in connection with the force as may.be deemed proper and expedient. The Minister for Justice (the Hon. Dr. Findlayy states, that ho has already made .inquiries in evory case where definite allegations against, tho .administration of tho'po- : lice force bavo reached' him, and in no case nave the allegations been sustained as the result of investigation: Dr. Findlay is, howl ever, anxious to havo the condition of the police force placed above suspicions, and he is 'hopeful that tho members of Parliament who made charges will give the most detailed information possiblo to tho commission, ui order that a just decision may be arrived at. Most of the allegations so far made, he states, have been so vague and general in charactor that it is difficult to investigate them without .farther information. , Mr. Dinnio, Commissioner of Police, has earnestly desired that an independent commission should inquire into tho charges, Mr. Bishop, who is to be appointed for the purpose, has earned> a high reputation by' nis, impartial conduct of previous commisSK w'i. an also as a Magistrate. With regard to his own with the police fprco, as Minister for Justice, Dr. I'indJay will make a statement soon from the pubho platform.
