SATURDAY'S SENIOR MATCHES. Fine weather and good grounds . assisted to proviuV close games at the Bay on Saturday afternoon. Thorndon defaulted, to United,' and so only three gamps took place in the senior round. Karori and Victoria College played an interesting game on No. 1 ground, and although the former team won, Victoria College showed themselves to Iks a much-im-proved team. Y.M.C.A. secured a win over Vivian! by ;o narrow margin, while-Wesley, who sustained defeat on tho two previous Saturdays, left Wellington in the minority by 3 goals to nil. The following arc tho ro.ports or'llie playrKARORI (6) V. VICTORIA GOLLECE (4). • Ciiief interest centred in'tho contest which took place on No. 1 ground between Karori and Victoria College. It was clear from tho start that Karori were not going to have by any means an easy task, but they proved superior, nevertheless. Only a few minutes' play, was required for College to get first hold of affairs —Beere establishing Karori's first; debit by a rather easy, shot. A minute later, from a rush down tho left-wing, l'opo caused a further fall in Karori stocks, sending in a shot which, if C. Da vies had, been alert,■-.. \J:i never have found tho net. Karori :■■'..'.•' fS2ncd up, and, getting away, at a good pace, gave tho College backs a lively five-minutes, and a corner was conceded by tho students to "save,", but they , -woro "saved" only temporarily, for C. Campbell (Karori's centre-half) sent in!a. very hot shot from tho "corner," and tho ice was broken. Davies then scored, Karori's second goal rather easily. College set out to find Karori's goal again, but without avail, .tho keeper of that important position (Campbell) saving time and again,' although his backs did not help, him very much. Beere and Smith were, at this stage, doing their best ! for College; who.were, however, finally.driven out, ana play transferred to the opposite goal, where Fulton had the misfortune, to put the ball above tho bar. Half-timo found tho scores two all. .. The second spell saw Karori's, forwards under way, and a sudden attack brought Campbell to tho fore, but his shot rebounded from the post. Davies, however, dived in, and once more the balance was. upset. Karori 3, Victoria College 2. ;A (scramble resulted in Campbell making a further successful, shot. 4—2. Hard play followed, and Dafies sent' in still another successful shot. 0—2.;. Gteod defence helped College to break away, and, meeting with weak hitting by C. Davies, Smith scored a good goal. 5—3. .Tho prettiest play of the day was then seen. Campbell stopped a;hard drive,, and- sent , the 'ball' to'- Davies, .who
made Murphy. the', agent for getting tho ball *■ to "Willis.. Tho. last-named, wfth a splendid •■■ effort from.a very'difficult angle, found tho ■ net. 6—3.. Another good display by Murnhy was marred by over-eagerness, his shot missing by a few inches, althougb.be had plenty, of time. College, in tho last few minutes, i increased the. pace and play around ■ thqir opponents' goal ended in a ' penalty ."bully." ■'.-.■ Becro had little trouble in boating Fulton, and the game ended 6—4, I Mr. S. Hickson'was referee. . ' ,' WESLEY (3) V. WELLINGTON (0). On No, 3 ground Wesley met Wellington, tho .latter- playing :undcr the disadvantage of a strong sun in tho first spell.' A moment after the bully-off, Birch .secured possession of tho ball, and drew first blood. ;■ Thereupon, Wellington instituted.a.'pretty passing , rush, .but no score'resulted. Play soon re--1 turned.to Wellington..territory, and, Sifter a ' smart, tusslo in tho":circle, Birch notched ■Wesley's .second goal. "Loose play, tho advantage being in Wesley's favour, succeeded for a quarter of an hour, during which Wellington lost a couple of by!missing the ball. Indeed, this fault' was: somewhat noticeable in this .spell.. ; No ' further scoro \ 'resulted ing : play•;.; followed ~-■.: the -, resumption only v broken'.,bjr, a',score. , five minutes'nater;:.';,The,.gaHib,:.e)i'dcdj: Wesley 3, : Wellington-nil..;. By; no stretch l of imagination can it., bo said j that .the game...was.: a good exhibition- of' hockey. Neither team showed; any. traces of combination, although there were flashes'of good • individual, play. , ■The .chief defect of. the losers was their faulty passing,' and utter unreliability when in their, opponents' circle. ' The back division,
.with' the^ exception,of Harty, left full-back, was not in form, the hakes did not feed the forwards, arid the. latter did not support one anothor. The winners played with considerable dash,' but'changes have been made in the places of the, players, and when the team got used to it, a distinct improvement should be noted.' Mr. Southwick controlled the game. Vi .'.;,, "■.'■"....•'.,','., ] i .\-O i; . ■ - y:m.C.al (2) V. VIVIAN. (0).";', YOn'No; ■£ ground a fast,' even game took place_ between Y.M.C.A. and Vivian. Getting into their accustomed.play at tie'start, Y.M.C.A. soon found themselves in Vivian's twonty-fivo, but Wheat-ley's shot was stopped finely by tho goalkeeper (Morpeth). Neither side had much advantage for tho. next 'few minutes until Y.M.C.A;'. broke-Y away, and danger seemed but the. shot just missed the. goal., Vivianj '■ who Up till this had not seen much of their opponents' circle, took tlio ball down, tho field, and a score 1 seemed likely, but Fortune refused to' smile on the effort. Good play by Loader enabled ,hitn to get, within striking .'distanco and register TiM.C.A.'s first' score; Even play p and a few badly-judged hits by .Vivian wore : tho-order'till lialf-time. : Vivian's-goal was assailed for some minutes after the.opening of the second term, but hard play kept it intact for some time, until -R/Parten, settled .;th'o matter by a good' shot. ' Y.M.C.A. 2, '■Vivian 0. Fast play followed, but little interesting work was to be seen nntilUio last minutes of- the 'spell;' when Vivian seemed as. if they were going to get through, but' they left their effort till it was'too late, the gamconding 2—o in Y.M.C.A.'s favour. Players unable to make the one-day trip are asked .to notify tho selectors to-day', The team is a strong one; and should' be victorious, but some comment has been occasioned by tho non-inclusion' of Kibblcwhito for.fullback.
