KARORI POST OFFICE.
Sb, —A report appeared... in >tho daily papers a week bi two ago in reference to a public nieoting held in Karori; at which it was decided-to recommend to tho Government a certain site for tho'proposed post office. As the question.of a post office is croating some interest in- tho borough, and as tho council has requested Mr. Luke.M.P., to urge tho matter on tho Government, I beg to make a few comments on tho position. At tho present time there are two litilo townships ■m, Karon, judged by tilio position of the 6nops. : Frist, there is.the nowor township, including the shops between the present tram terminus and tho Anglican Church on the highest point of the m&in road. Then there is the older township 1 in the vicinity bl the present council chambers, which is som« distanco on tho. southern side of this highest point on tho mainvroad. That, is, tho high part of the main road completely divides and will always do so,.tho.two townships. Fron' ■this, it is evident that:a post, office placed'uteither township cannot, bo quite aocoptabM 'to! tho other. Such being tho case, the question resolves itself into this:, WhSon of tho two i townships is.tho more important, from a business and residential point of view, and haying decided this, is it likely to retain its importance p On these heads there can only be one answer. Tho newer ■ township, i.e., that. between tho tram terminus and tbo, church, is tbo more important, and will continue to retain that position; There are mora stores in this part than in tho old; andipeoplo who havo gone into business of late ycara have all chosen this, ©nd, paying an averago price, of £10 a'foot for land, whereas thoy could have, obtained main road land cheaper ,at tho southern end. ':.',''
■ The reason for .this is evident. Shop, keepers naturally, go whoro, business is to bo done. The newer township taps a larger residential area, which is onon and sunny, and where settlement is growing more rapidly than elsewhere. To the south of the older township, the hills narrow in and the land is low-lying,, so. that its configuration makes it bleak and cold. • There is"' not the sain© residential area, .ond i what thoro is, is unattractive.. In fact this is the reason, for tho existencei'.of the newer township. ■"'.'. ■'; ' At\ the present time, between tho tunnel and the tram terminus a very largo estate is being roaded, and owing to sunny position will still further increase tho settlement in the vicinity of tho newer township. Itio quite safe ■to say that it will be * a wellsettled residential area before tho low-lying part' of Southern Karori/ This prospective residential area, including the present largely-settled beautiful Karori, will eventually carry moro population than all'tho rest of Karori. . .'.' v .. '-... r •'.•:, Such being the case,: of what use to all this: population, or even to the present residents of beautiful" Karori, and the shopkeepers in the newer township, will a post office bo next'to tho council 1 think the. authorities who may. bo called on to decido tho position should keep theso facts' in view, in spite of the recommendations at tho public meeting. ■ I do not object to that recommendation because of tho ownership of tho recommended section, but as, a ratepayer I strongly object to it on tho demerits of.Sts.position.--1 am, etc.,... ■.■'■■";:•-■■ ' -KARORI .RATEPAYER. ....
