COASTAL LIGHT- : REINSTALLED/ Since .tho lighthouse , on' Tuahino Point, near Gisborne; was destroyed by'fire'some two years ago, shipmasters have continually been urging its reinstatement, and, finally, the Marino 3)e--part-meatl decided to crcct a new light, and tho work, started about two months'ago, was completed thiß week. The light, which-is supplied from.-.an acetylenc plant erected'in the .tower, is regulated upon a clockwork, eystem, and will flash every few scconds, and it'is estimated can be . seen at a distance of. 14 miles; It was to have been tested this week,-but lt will not bo set in permanent operation until*gazetted by tho Gisbomo Harbour. WHITE STAR LINENS''NAMES. r The great steamship .lines which christen their vessels with a uniform termination are notoriously hard put'to it sometimes for fretfi namcß. The Laurentic ought strictly, perhaps,' to derive her name froni the capital of tho ancient kingdom of Latium, which was called" Laurentum, it is said, from the abundance of laurels that grew inthe country. But perhaps tho company wcro thinking rather of tho rivor St. Lawrence, which tho vessel ia to navigate. The name is not the happiest thought: (says the "Manchester Guardian") the White Star . Lino liayo hit onnot 00 happy, for example, as tho names Olympic and Titanic, which aro to to given to tho great monsters which are now being built, but it is bettor than somo of the namos which havo been suggested by the wags who have amused themselves with the subjcct. Idiotio and Spusmoilic aro among their contributions to tho difficulty, and so also aro Sea-sick and No-tick, names which satisfy the ear alone and defy the law 01 Epelling as well aa the sense of propriety. GISBORNE HARBOUR BOARD. , A. sy/cial meeting of tho Gisbomo Harbour Board' Was held on Monday ■ to consider tho : report, prepared by Mr. L. G. P. Spencer, C.E., upon tho question of tho best steps to bo taken to obviate the range in the river.- For .a considerable period ; tho breaking (of tho waveg across the entrance to tho port has constituted a source of inconvenience and occasionally of danpor to thoso taking vessels' in'and out. Various schemes havo been .proposed.'to meet the, difficulty and, rccontly. Mr. -Spencer < was asked to furnish a report. Ho proposes to have several blocks of'2oft. in length cut out of the groyno, the deptfy of the excavation to .bo within two feet of low water. Ho argues that the, waves across tho waterway ana which at present strike and rebound' from the opposito wall will pass ovor the cut. After due consideration, the report was adopted at Monday's meeting, and tho.work in connection with the BChemo is to bo taken in hand immediately.
| 1 GANGWAY PASSES. " The • Union Steam Ship .Company have found that the visitor -nuisancc on the arrival and departure of their steamers is assuming serious proportions. This is*©specially tho case on tho departuro of tho larger intercolonial, vessels, when tho gangways and stairways of tho stoamcra are regularly blocked, to tho discom* fort and inconvenience of the ship's officers and crew, who thus experience difficulty in wording the ship. The company lias thereforo taken into serious consideration tho Question of absolutely suspending tho issue of frco gangway passes and of making a small charge—gay, sixpencefor those who desire to board the dopaxting steamers to say good-byoto* their friends. Any rcceints-from this would then be devoted to • charities, such . as tlie wiipwrecked belief Society. An experience which the ,-officers- of tho Itoeraki had when Sir Robert Stout and several othor prominent persons woro departing from Wellington induced the company to try tho cxperimont.of restricting-'the issuo of gong, way . paßfics on nn occasion the Maheno had a largo number of pusangero. refused wised the old system of indiscriminate' issue u> bo reverted to. However, the trouble of visitors crowding tho Btoamcrß until tho last minute has becomo more acute lately, and thequestion of making some small charge is tfioro* fore being considered. _Utix discharging coal at Napier, tho barque Hippolaa is to load a cargo of white pine for Bydnoy.
