• NOTES ON THE RACING. : ■!'■ (By Telegraph.-Special Correspondent) ' , . Hastings, Juno 17. Proceedings opened to-day With the' Hack Hurdles, in which' Polyanthus was made favourite. Different'tactics -. woto pursued with her to-day, but tho change was ineffectual, and, after flattering her backers till tho last' fence, she fell back beaten. AndrewMack and Biplomatio'made the 1 early running, but Rawhiti, well handled by W. Young, was always prominent, and, at the six-furlong post, -he went to tho front, and - was- -notheaded again. Somali put in a good late run, but was beaten by a neck. : ' , Pohutu wiis tho only horso ; enquired for m the second race, and he won comfortably; At tho start Muskerry was first away, while Pohutu stumbled badly, but E. Lowo'quickly recovered his balance, and set out 1 after the leader. At the half-mile post he was in a handy position, and eventually won oasily from Jus- stable: companion, Larasdorff, who finished very fast. Iranui again got badly away, and was novor prominent. Tho locally-owned Kairoma was a strong public choice in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, out, after, running prominently for a mile, lie faded away, and finished last. Tho Auckland crack, Ben Jonson, lost his rider at the first fence. After this Commander took charge, and was not headed till a few yards off tho post, though at several times during tho race Itis supremacy was disputed. Compass, Gold Dusti and Commander jumped the last fence together, and, in tho run home, Munn's gelding won bv a nccl; from Commander, with Compass closo up third. - Tho. race was * run .at a: slow paco over the first mile, but, after that, ' it improved. Kairoma's poor showing is drfficult to acoount for, as ho had been going very well on tho tracks, and no fault coukl bo round with bis jumping in the race. -.The Ladies' Necklace was generally voted as between Pikopo and Irish Hifle, anything else being at long odds. At the start Mr. Geo. Beatson, on The Squatter, 'anticipated tho barrier, and got a break of several lengths, while, Irish Rifle stumbled and nearly unseated Mr. Neagle, who was cheered for his good ' recovery. The, Karamu-owncd Claughton made the early running, . while Pikopo was always handy, with Irisk Rifle lying last. Pikopo won easily." from 'Irish Riflo, who camo very fast at the finish. ,• Tho- June Steeples was a grand race. • At the first fence Coy was in front, . but then Gold Shower ran, into the lead, and a fast pace was set. Tho Gold Reef gelding led all down tho back; but fell at the double, and Coy took up tho running followed by Jackpot and-Eurus. Tho latter ran off ot the samo fonooi as yesterday. Jackpot and Coy. wore in front whin the last mile was entered upon, jvith Speciosa in third place. ,The latter took charge at the six-furlong post, and alio and Jackpot then had tho raco to themselves. Both wero jumping excellently, and it was not uiltil. the last fenco that the weight told-on Jackpot, and, in a warm finish, tho maro won by a length, with Lingerer just in front of Coy, Aroha fell at the double. Te Kainui was the only other horso to finish. . - . i
North-east wns first away in the Raukawa Handicap, and, from this out, he was* never headed. Rohepotae was his nearest attendant down the back, and, across the bottom, Thetis and King's Prize ran into : the places and stayed thero till ,tlie finish.
Waikftraka was made favourite in the Final Hnndicap, but there was always plenty of money for Vi. Tlio ! latter jumped out first .and was never headed, winning in an easy'manner by a couple of lengths. Illustrious was sore-when doing his preliminary, but'he shook, it off, and was going very strongly, at tho fluiah.
