A meeting of the St. Jaincß Literary and Debating Society was held on Wednesday ovoning. Tho evening was devoted to competitive essays. Mr. H. ,C. Hardy, tho judge, awarded first prize to Mr. B. L* Zoin, for an essay on the American Revolution. A humorous effort, by Mr. E. M, Finlayson, was much appreciated. There was a very good attendance.
Tho Wellington companies of tho Hovnl new Zealand Artillery, under Major J. "E. Hume, will undergo field training at Minimal' to-day. Included in the programme of operations are entrenchments, military engineering, infantry, and tactics. One of tho 15-pmindor field guns will also lwi tested. Major Lnseclles (Infantry Service) and, Captain Duigan (Engineer Service) will bo present. A number of shopkeepers on either side of the block of buildings in Willis Street leased by Mr. Goodall, which block is now tho subjeet of negotiations as to the amount of compensation to be paid for allowing the buildings to bo moved back, in order to widon the street, are understood to have' oetitioned tho City Council, urging that the buildings should be set back at the price asked by tno lessee.
