EMBROIDERED GOWNS.
Just now there is a perfect rage for em>roidery on gowns, saj;s an English writer. ! havo been seeing designs for this kind of ihing, suitable for those modern ago tunics, klany embroiderers put the solid part of the lesign right; on to tlie material 111 cloth-of-;old, outlining the' edges with fine metal :ords, or coloured cords, sewn down 'with )lack. Then flowers are made of flat satin ititch embroidery, also couched with gold or lilver and coloured stones and pieces of nother-of-pearl, are seivn down where needed n the scheme of . design and colour. It leeds some careful designing first, and a due •egard to .the place for which the embroidsry is needed. This is really essential. So iften embroidery fails on a gown because t does not fit exactly where it is 'wanted. I iaw a lovely design for the skirt of a gown, :o be carried out in thistles and white heater, tied with silver bows, and a wanderng ribbon' going all ■ through thd- design, file thistles'were drawn in natural manner, md stood up high,. worked in mauve silk, ind leaves of tissue, edged with cord. The, leather was in.white ; French knots and spiky eaves of dull green, large silver bows, and luttering undulations. They are drawn in ections, with a view to a repeat. This idea n briar roses would be lovely, the stalks in irown. tissue, leaves in bronzo. satin, all iclged with brown and gold cord.
