WEBB AND ARNST.

FINAL DEPOSITS PAID, i FAST SPIN BY WEBB. (BT TEkEGKAril —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wanganui, June 15. ■ The final deposits of £300 per man wore lodged .with the stakeholders, in the ArnstWebb :match to-day.,' • Both men'continue to do good work, and report-themselves as being very well. Arnst does- much moro work oil .the river than Webb, who is fit, and whose supporters aro confident that ho will row the raco of his life next Tuesday. It is generally understood that Webb put up a remarkably fine trial over the lull course on Sunday, though the time has not leaked out. AYhelch mado the pace at the start, but. was left in the rear after going a i mile, the ex-champion continuing practically tho "amc pace to the end of the second mile. At the; bend Green picked him up, j but Webb soon drow rijjht away, rowing 26 to-tile minute. Finishing with ,a splendid burst over , the last 200 yards, striking 29. Tho way he sculled down the home stretch greatly'impressed tho touts, his very strong finish- denoting; that ho is perfectly sound and well. : After passing tho post Webb waited for. Green and Wholch, and then the three paddled down stream to Aramoho— four miles. Webb was out on the lowct part of the course yesterday, covering a mile, and sprinting with Wh6lch. He will do ithe rest of his rowing on the lower course.

Arnst.put in very solid work on Sunday. Yesterday he came down stream in front of a steamer, rowing yery fast for a mile, and then, easing up, finished the course steadily. In.the afternoon lie was out again, doing long, strong work, with a few sprints. Later. A fresh in tho river. interfered somewhat with the training operations of both men today. Arnst, however, did a good row, and shaped well. Webb, who evidently satisfied himself and his party on Sunday afternoon that lie can cover the full course in his best style, .will take things easily till Tuesday next. He had two short rows tcf-day, and practised startinc and sprinting. MANiWATU RIVER FOR SCULLING.' (BT TELEGIIAI'n—SIT.t'IAI, IMllltESroNllENT 1 Palmerston, June 15. ' Mr. S. Messena, the well-kiiown hope owner, is endeavouring to arrange a sculling match between Wheloh and an Australian champion on the Manawatu River at Foxton, over a courso known as "The Lon<* Reach." This is-considered an ideal stretch of water for such- a pwpose, but. doubt exists-as;to whether tliero would bo sufficient sculling room between the spans of the Wirokino Bridge. Mir. Messena intends to have the cours9 inspected by experts, and, if suitable, it is probable that an interesting race will take place. '
