;HAPPY VALT.TIY EOAD WOEES! .The work of opening up the Happy Valley) Eoad from Brooklyn to. the sea coast—a work which has been hanging in tho balance for a long timo—now appears to be within measurable distance of commencing. A sum of .£2OOO, for the work.wae voted' a considerable timo back, arid the money now being in hand it was resolved, at last Thursday's meeting of the City Council, that the work should be proceeded with. The work is a needed one, and, farther, lit will provide work, for a .certain number of fte unemployed, which latter fact has led the City Council to move , that tho work be pushed ahead ae vigoronsly as' possible. With the' completion of the road, the city will possess an important addition to its scanty list of drives, and the new road will give a clear run from the city through Brooklyn,' thence to Isliind Bay along the'shore, and on to Oriental Bay via the Queen's The old Happy Valley lioad was laid off some years back,bnt tho position of the road'is not considered a ■ good one for construction purposes,' and the result is that a deviation has been planned by tho; city's engineering staff. The owners ofj&e land concerned 1 have been communicated with in reference to tho deviation,'and it is not anticipated tliat there will be any difficulty in coming to. an arrangement with them, although details will not be complete! for a few days. Two surveying parties commenced taking loyols yesterday, bo that, ns eoon as tho deviations arc agreed to, work can commence. "Tho length of road to bo formed, is about a mile, :'
