TWO DISTRICTS DISSATISFIED. BERHAMPORE AND ISLAND BAT. The question of securing some reduction m tram fares for regular travellers is agitating residents of Berhanipore and Island Bay. Two deputations waited on the Tramwayi Committee of the City Council at it* meeting yesterday afternoon! Concerning' this, matter, the Borhamnoro .' deputation presented a petition bearing the names of between 700 and 800 residents asking that a penny fare, or concession tickets at the rate of Is. per dozen, be granted to residents only from the corner of Luxford Street and Adelaide Road to Courtcnay Placo. The deputation from Island Bay. urged tb« desirability of a concession of a ride by return ticket .of two-thirds :of the distance for two-third 6 of _ the cost, or :'w. ah alternative, the adoption of the rcconi- 1 meridation made by tie Tramways Committee of the old council, viz., a ride of 2d. to Cour- • tenay Place, and 2Jd. to ,tho Government Station. The deputation pointed, out that while Island Bay people nave to take a . longor ride twice daily; than the residents of any other suburb, they were still tho only people who had not obtained some concession. The, objection that a 6d. return fare was used 'freo'ly by Island Bay people was, the deputation urged, no defenco, for tbie ticket wnt used by people from all over the city, and therefore was no special concession to residents of the bay. . It was,pointed out that both Kilbirnie and Karon wore enjoying tho pririlogo of breaks in sections at roduocd . fares, and' it was contended that there was no reason why tho samo should not apply to Island Bay. The deputation also set out that the objection that the rido wpa quite long enough, was met by a statement that tho return ticket, at present mado use of, was not of bo muoh convenience to tho major, ity of the residents'of the bay. as a ticket which, at the same rate per oar mile, allowed of residents ridins (by return ticket If need be) two-thirds of the distance for two-thirde ' of tho cost.
