Officially, the building of a ship commences from tho time the keel is laid, and the time oc- . cupied in construction is caloulated from this point—though much of the work in connection with her equipment may have ■..■: been started., beforehand. The, Dreadnought was laid dotfn in October 1905, was launched in February 190G, and was returned as "completed" in 1906. The Bollerophon.w&s laid down in December 1306, was launched in July 130", held her trials in October and : November 1908, and was' commissioned on February 20, 1009, a total period from l&jing down to commissioning.of about two years and two months. Britain's third Dreadnought, the Temeraire, wa« laid down in January 1307, and recently completed her et«am rrinls. The building of the Dreadnought was specially rushed, but the time, taken by the Bellerophon—two years and two months approximately—may be regarded .'"' as' about tho normal thing.
