While a young man named William James Murphy, who ap)>oared at tho Ashburton Magistrate's Court to-day upon several charges of thoft, and who was remanded to Christchurch pending tho heaTing- of further charges against him,. Was being brought'to town by the first express, he took advantage of a momentary opportunity to' jump off the train. ' ■ • ' : Ho was in tho custody of two constables at tho time, and was-handcuffed, and whan ho jumped off, the train was approaching Hornby, and travelling at tho rate of nearly thirty miles an hour. Tho man fell clear of tho line, and seemed uninjured by his fall, for when last seon ho was gotting through, tho railway fence. , Tho train waß etoppod at Hornby, and tho constables alighted and travelled back to whwo the man had jumped' off, but could find no traco of him, and- a subsequent search made throughout tbo evening also: proved fruitless. It is oxuected. howoyor, that, tho man will bo captured shortly. ' ■■.*•:
