BOY SCOUTS.
t — o ' ■ HEED DAT AT Mtr«-mah, The various boy scout patrols of tfco!<aty,4ini suburbs put in a field day among the sanddunes and coast Mils at Mjrmnar on Saturday. It would appear that the "Tuatoras" (Miiamar patrols) aro net alone in this now pastime. Tho Post and Telegraph Department Itaa its "Otters," "Ecd Door," and "Tumgarooß," while there is also a 00130 at Brooklyn, and another ai Khandallah. Tie two Lurb-namod joined forces with the "Otters," "Red Beer," and "Kangaroos," in an invasion of tlie territ<OT of tho "Tuataras," tho rendezvous being the city boundary, at the -ond of tho ElWrme tram ewition, and at 2 pjn. scouted forth in rations directions, the mam party proceeding across ■• tho isthmus and working its way round in the vioinity of the fishermen's hrata, bejond Bay. A very enjoyable, afternoon mas epeat by. tho boys, who, if they. are not exactly soieutific, are at least keen.; . ' Brooklyn, and Khmdalkh No. I inovod off tovraids ttio Heads b> Taraldna- Bay on. their . way to take up the position of an invading body. Three escapees were .tracked , with partial success—two eluded deteotion. Arriring at the Bay, tho inland inoremont was begun. Good cover was afforded on file slopes, and tho right of tho invading forerunners was strengthened as tho ridge where tho defondors were likely to be met wae neared. On the ridge an umpire w.as posted. Tho defending contiagoni, consisting''of tho remaining scouis, after making good ue« of tho cover on their route, scaled the sides of a stream flowing towards Lyeli Bay. Their right was also advanced in force, so that each found a weak opposition and a " turning movement" developed. Further practice was indulged in on the rotnrn, and • tho patrols afterwarde left for their homes. Some Jessons to bo learnt are tho necessity for unobtrusive colours in tho scouts' *iu.'pment A. white Haversack, for instance, is too conspicuous. The value of' silence and tho great utility of a series of signals with tho patrol calk, eignalling "advance," "retreat," "close in," "move to left or right," were demonstrated. Tho bearing of the Tads on Saturday was very commendable, and this was enhanced by the neat and serviceable uniform worn by some of tho patrols, whoso organisation 3s well advanoed. Further econtins practice, in which lads who arc not os yet mombsM of patrols, can also take part, will take place nest Saturday afternoon, if the weather is favourable. «t■ " '
