During the recent wet weather the whole city at night was ahointod with pure beastliness. Collins Street' was; simply carpeted ; with'filth:" Tho paper strongly denounces, the citizens for •Weratw , j(Psiic'ii.^a , 'Bt^ , .'of'•things!! 1 . 1, *;■'!;•'""■'' , [A Wellington resident,'who has an intimate knowledge of. Melbourne, and its drainage and street' works,Vinformed;' a 'representative■■ of iTHE'DoMtN'toK : last evening, that the Melbourne streets were .'clean...' In'fact, he did not know .of anything better in any .part of Australasia. To his mind the statements cabled were quite unjustified, and he was satisfied that the people of' Melbourne would be highly indignant when they found out what had heen cabled to Now Zealand. Collins Street and the adjoining streeta in- the ..city, were nil, wood-blocked, and .the city had a most complete sewage andstreet:6leaninp .system..' The .dust, nuisance was very Severe, m Melbourne, 'and with-the; streets run-, ning north .and south and being very wide the .northerly, winds brought ■immense clouds of dust into the city from a long distance dway. This had: always been a souroo of annoyance.
