' A LAYMAN'S LEAGUE. ' THE NEW ORPHANAGE: . A meeting of the Wellington Presbytery was held yesterday„tho Moderator (Dr. Gibb) presiding. . ! It was not to the'church extension fund, a thing thathad never occurred before' in the annals of the Churchand the parish had secured five elders. Tho parish was in a.'very satisfactoryposition, ami. it was hoped in the near future to place a minister in,charge at a salary of' £250. . . Mr.' iW. Allan, representative of the Layman's' League, referred to the work done'by the league in America, and ha. said i that literature oil the subject was expected shortly. The . secretary .of tho Wellington Elders' Association forwarded the following resolution:—"That wo, as an association, approach the Presbytery of Wellington, requesting that-wo be permitted to start -a. layman's league on the lines in operation in Canada, within'-the bounds of the Presbytery." , : Mr. J. G.W. Aitkeri moved that the request ;be granted. He thduglit that the scheme should bo laid before the various congregations! Discussion folIowed ( the majority being in favour of permission being granted. It was decided to give the required permission and to aid tie movement in every way- ' Tho Moderator reported that the Orphanage' Home.had been opened, and tliero were now eight occupants. He had paid a visit to other orphanages, and the results were being incorporated in.the by-laws. It was hoped to get his Excellency the Governor to declare the institution formally open.' Money . was coming in, but more was wanted; commodities also were required. Tho executive had resolved to ask t'he Presbytery to fix-a day for collections for the orphanage. Mrs.. Miils was' a deaconess, and she should be' ordainod. He. suggested that a committee should deal with this. Tho licv. J. K. Elliott moved in the direction indicated. A commission of Presbytery/consisting of Mr.,J. G. W. Aitken, Mr. W. M. Hannay, and the Moiderator and clerk, was set up to perform the ordination .ceremony. ' Tho call of the Rev. J. M'Oaw from Maryborough to Lower Hutt tihen came up. The Rev. A. Thomson ; explained the position and the commissioners stated that the call was unanimous. Investigation was made into the financial position and th» amount owing th» retiring minister. It was found that tliero was a deficiency, and it was mode clea.r that this must lie remedied. It was explained that the" money was available. A Martinborough commissioner stated that they did not wish to place any obstacle in Mr. M"'Caw'» way. The call was sustained, and the induction ceremeny will take place at Lower Hutt on Thursday, July S. The Moderator Will be present, and the Rer. A. Thomson will address the,minister and people! " The Rer. G. Iv. Stowell was appointed Moderator of Martinborough in succession'to Mr. M'C-aw.
