.The growing ■interest 1 !" in meat works in Now Zealand givos somo value to tlio question of tho by-products of the industry. Tho manufacture of by-products from what was formerly waslo is being rapidly developed in Now, Zealand and elsewhere. Parts of tho animals formerly discarded aro now turned into' medicines, oils, soaps, brushes, and combi, mirrors,-handles for household cutlery and tools, leather for harness,'swots, 'and travelling bags, studs and buttons (from tho bones a"nd teeth). A list of tho slaughterhouse products that are now utilised for commercial purposes includes 'hair, bristles, blood, bones, horns, hoofs,! glands arid'membranes—from which latter are obtained pepsin, thymus, thyroids, pancreatin, parotid substances, and suprarenal ■;■ capsules—gejatin, glue, fertilisers, hides, skins,, wool, intestines, ucatsfoot oil, soap stock, glycerine (from tallow), brewers' isinglass,, and albumen. Albumen, obtained from the blood of .slaughtered animals, is (used' 'by calico printers, tanners, sugar refiners, and others. The bones coming from cooked meat are boiled,- and the fat and gelatine which result ,are used, tho former to make soap and tho latter for transparent coverings for chemical, preparations, and for other purposes. The uncooked bones are used in a""-variety of ways. ''From tho bones of .tho foet of cattle are made the handles of tooth brushes and knives,. chessmen a'n.d nearly every article for which ivory is suitable. Combs, tho backs of brushes, and large buttons are made from boms, 'which aro split and rolled flat by; heat and pressure. Hoofs ; are utilised according to .their colour.- White hoofs are imported! largely' into .Japarf; to bo made into 'various "Japanese ' art-ornaments.■ From striped-hoofs, buttons and horn ornaments are made,' and black hoofs are used in;the manufacture of cyanide of potassium for tho extraction of gold, and_aro .also ground up as fertilisers.' Neatsfoot and other oils are extracted from the feet; and other 'parts,of- tho, body: Buttenne,. and margarine are also largely composed of the fat' of animals. '■, '.!',''-. '
