NOTES AND COMMENTS.
rßr Glincob.l . The Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting will be; concluded on Wednesday. ' A big commission was worked in favour of Michiieloff, who won the Ranfurly Handicap at' EUerslio on Saturday, and tho colt's owner must havo landed a good stake over the victory. Capitol's time for the Groat Northern Steeplechase is the slowest for tho past fivo years. The record for the race is held by Sol, who won in 1906. Tho Hnstings trainer, H. Hickey, has purchased Chamois from Mr. G; Hunter for 100 guineas. pM/vH- E. Troiitbeck, who has leased Gold Shower from Mr. G. P. Donnolly, has handed the gelding over to J. Roe to train. M. Deeble, who rodo Capitol in the Great Northern Steeplechase, had not previously ridden tho winner of a big cross-country event in New Zealand. Kiatoro, who acted as runner-up to Capitol on Saturday, has twico won the Great Northern Steeplechase. Le Beau, -who'was third filled a similar position behind Loch Fvno and Sol.last year. • • The Wellington Pony and Galloway Racing Uub .will probably commence its now season early in August.
Jookeys A. Oliver and S. Reid, who aro at' present in Wellington, join W. Young at tho conclusion of tbo ISllerslie races, and tho trio go for a wwk's shooting in the King Country. .. Mediterranean (San Fran—Lady Bovys) is to join C. Pritchard's team at Lower Hutt. At n mooting of the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club Committee, held on Friday last, a balance-sheet submitted in connection with tho rccont Autumn meeting, showed a profit of ovor £1100. ; , J. Hathaway has, now got Hatloy in'regular, work at Palnierston North, and tho Saracen gelding has been entered for tho' hack hurdle races at tho Napier Park incoti"g. . None of the Porirua horses have been entered at tho Napier Park Racing Club's Winter mooting, ,-
Cargill, who won tho Manchester Cup, was only successful in one ovent last year, but ho ran well forward in a couple of big I handicaps and, this season, ho is reckoned to bo one of tho best handicap horses racing in England. ' • Waipuna's good form in the Elder Stakes at the South Australian Jockoy Cluu's meei<hig last month was only a flash of his brilliancy as tho son of Soult has ruu badly in his three, races'since. Doughty, who won tho Adelaide Birthday Cup on Saturday, had not won a race until tho South Australian Jockey Club's meeting last May, when ho won tho Maiden Plato. Capitol, winner of tho Great Northern Steeplechase, started three times last season, winning two steeplechases, and running second in another.- This season ho won tho Avondalo Steeplechase. -.The company ho met on tlioso occasions was very modorato, but tho Leolantis gelding acquired a reputation, for being a' very safe jvunpor,' and, shortly after the nominations for the Great Northern Steeplechase wero. published, ho wna coupled with tho mostly likely hurdle horses. As Bully, who won the Great Northern Hurdles on Thursday, was not much fancied, tho bookmakers are not likely to havo been hit for large amounts over tho double. .
