Gill (son of Mr.; William Gill), who.underwent a Borions oporation a fortnight ago, will be pleased to hoar ho is on tho fair road to recovery. He is in Nurse Jackson's private hospital. . Mr. R. W. Hill, who was lately secretary to tho Chief Justice and previously secretary to tho Leader of the Opposition (Mr.W. F. Massoy. M.P.j, lias joined Mr. H. Morpoth in legal practice in Auckland.
Mr. J. W. Mncdonald, assistant solicitor to the Publio Trust OSioo, has been appointed to fill tho position of solicitor in toe offico which was formerly bold by Mr; F. J. Wilson, who retired on superannuation on March 31 last. This/ afternoon Mr. Justice Cooper leaves Wellington to-conduct circuit sittings -as under:—Blenheim, Juno 9; Nelson, June 21; Greyniouth, June 28; and Westport, July 5. ■ The two last-mentioned sittings are in lieu of . sittings of tho District Court, which,is being abolished. : Dr. A. The many friends in Otago and Canterbury will regret to learn (says the "Timarn Post") of tho doath of Mr. John Iteming Douglaß, which took place recently in Now South Wales. A few years ago, after soiling his homestead and station at Waihao Downs, Mr. Douglas purchased an estate on Darling Downs, New SoutOi Wales, where he had been residing up to the time of. his death." Mr. Douglas was not much ovof- forty< years of ago. Ho succeeded his father,-*tho late Mr.. John Douglas, of Mount Itoyal, and while residing in Waihao Downs was an energeticfarmer and a good neighbour to all around. He was for Bomo years president of the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association and chairman of the Waimate County Council. On Friday afternoon, Mr. J. B. Johnstone, thojotiring manager of, the Feildiiig branch of Messrs. Dalgoty and Co.'s business, ro» ooived two presentations. Mr. Johnetono had been in charge of the business of tho firm from the opening of the Foilding branch, two and a half years ago, and.has now left to take charge of Mr. L. M'Kclvie's property at tho.mouth of the RangitiUei River. Tho first presentation, comprising a handsome liquor frimo, was made by Mr. T. A. Moodie, for tho Manawatu staff of the firm, and the second, oonsisting of a Queen Anhe silver tea and coffee service, with gipsy kettlo, by Mr. N. Gorton, on behalf of the local auctioneers, their staffs, and friends. Mr. S. J. Evans, of Masterton., is to take Mr. JohnstonoY place as Feildihg manager.
