At the homo turn in this race, Purakau, who , ivas running just abreast of Tninklo, slipped and'came down, and , Tho Saint fell over 1 ■ Fletcher's horse. Tho rider of Purakau made ', a marvellous recovery, but W. Prico, on The Saint, came off, and the Sylvia Park mare , sustained a broken leg, which, necessitated her, destruction. \,, >Sir Frisco, Mahuta, Woodhey, Kopu, and Maiora all received solid support in the big 'i event, but Roosevelt was neglected on the machine, At thq barrier'rise Price rushed - the Wanganui horse off: and ho led the whole I way. Mahuta did not begin too well, but he finished very generously, and was unduoky in not scoring. Maiora was in the ruck the whole way. ' Auratus, who still looks in the rough, but whose legs are apparently quite sound, disputed favouritism with Aotea throughout the • speculating on the Hack Hurdles, but at tie , ' .finish the latter had a slight call on the Waverley horse. Backers of the latter were put out of suspense, for he wme to flying back and catching him-when ho was m.the air. Aotoa jumped vory badly, and -> appoah!d..not>.>td'isighti.hfs r foticW , properly.* .Diplomatic «li>dn' a ft er i tuofnrsOal&nilo, and was in command at' 1 tho turn, but , Cairns rodo a very confidont race on Rendrook,,and,.won ,by five.lengths. •Eγ! King' , agairt disappointed his trainer, who was at a loss,to account for his poor display. ' North East and AVaipunui, monopolised tho market, in the Stewards' Handicap, and thev ran first and second. A. Oliver, who was up on. tho winner, gave a splendid exhibition of . horsemanship, and had to ride his mount Jiard tho whole way, as he was vory slow at gettmg'on his feet. ' o ■ Groat interest centred in tho meeting of / S B3ll ° and . Sunb °nnot in tho, Raifway Handicap, as, in somo quarters,' it wao thought that it was Jenkins's horsemanship " « et ir d i.yf on tno Rangiuru Handioap on m£ Jtfonk's filly on the first day. Nothing else was inquired for by 'backers and, had any of tho other i horses won, tho ring would - navo nad a turn When tho start was made, H. Cairna, on Sunbonnot, quickly cot a break of three lengths on Gipsy Bcllo, and the pace was so fast that this pair had a j A o/'/nJjy.ten lengths on tho romainder of the field. Across the boitom Jenkins had reduced the gap, and entered the straieht on Sunbonnot'e quarter. A battle royaf then v eneued, and tho public wore treated' to a wondorrul exhibition of horsemanship by two mat-class riders. Supporters of each horso cheered lustilyj and the on'thusiasm i> as vorv marked. Ipch by inch. Gipsy Belle gained on bunbonnet, both riders exerting them- ;< . Bolyea with Jiands and heels only. Suddenly Cairns was seen to'draw Ins whip, and tho cry.went Up that the favourite was beaten. ' So'sno -was,- though she battled out every yard of tho course. At tho judge's box the two ponies u ere separated by half a length. On returning to'scalo, both ridors were heartily cheered. With josterday's performance there is no',doubt .now as to who is tho • better of tho two mares at even weights. Any bad luck which Sunbgnnet oxporiorioed on tho firstday was more than compensated for yesterday,, >hon Cairns etolo a good throe lengths at tho > barrier. '• Bad luck at the barrier spoilt Pikopo's chances in tho Ohan Welter, in* which ho ran a good'race. ' ' ' ' Pukowai was unlucky horse at tho barrier, and his numerous supporters only cot a percentage of their money back whan Mr. Cross's colt ran second to Waiouru in • tho Final Hack" Scurry, The winner is a full-brother to Motoa, and has a groat private reputation. . , j .^——— ( The Great Northern Steeplechase will bo decided at Ellorslio this afternoon, and as two previous winners of tho event aro en- ' gaged, an interesting contest should result. When' Sir Tristram non the Raukawa Cup in 1907, his win was preceded by a victory < s in tho Summer Handicap at Trenth'am in " ' January, and in the Autumn Hardicap at Trehtham in April. By 'a strango'coincidence he'won the same thrco ovonts this season. Another winner of the Raukawa Cup, in Lyrist, also won tho Autumn Handicap at Trentham tho same year, as ho succeeded at Otaki, and though the Summer Handicap atjTrentham was not then in existenco Lyrist " raced prominently a,t -the Wellington Cup meeting bv acting -as runner-up to Lctherin , in tho Wellington Raping .Club Handicap. At the Otaki spring meeting last October, 1 C. Jenkins was in good-form, and rode half a dozen winners, and ho again had a big innings at tho meeting just, concluded. Doublo winners at tli<* Otaki meeting were Coronotted and Gipsy Belle. Sunbonnet and Pukowni each ran tivo seconds. R. Hatch had a number of good mounts at Wingrtui josterday, but his onlv win vis on Ilarita in tho Provincial Handicap. On the first day of the meeting he did not hive tho luck to bo on a winner. ' Inchbonny was a lone; time striking form, but tho Clanrannld filly has now made up for her previous disapnointments by'annexing a doublo nin at Wmgntui. , Thero is so much, racing on Boxing Dny in various parts of the Wellington Province that tho Lou or Valley Jockey Club havo had difficulty in making ,i sucews of their annual race meeting. The last fixture resulted in,a loss of £liio, and A-mniority of members have decided tint it would be advisable to change th« annual d,ito of th" mcetinf;. Next season's fixture is to be hold on Fontombor 30 and October 1, and if tl-o rlub has the luck to secure favonreblp wr-atlier on those dates the future oitcrht to result in an improvement of tho clubV finances,.
