The fall in the excess of birth over deaths in (France since the beginning of the. present century down to 1906 is is follows:—In 1902, the excess of births was 84,000; 1903, 73,000; 1904, 57,000j;1805, 87,000; 1006, 27,000.'-In 1907 there were 20,000 more deaths than births. In 1908, 18,067" more births than deaths.' ■-■. English Birth-rate Increases. . ■''- -'■■ -." ." • ■ The vital statistics for England 'for 1908— though i not finally corrected—show that England had an increase in the birth-rate for tho first time since" 1895. The birth-rate in England, for 1908 works out approximately at 26.66 per thousand. The revised figures for 1907 showed the rate to be 28.3, a fall'of 0.8 from 1906, and the lowest ever reached. The inorease of even 0.36 is remarkable after a decline that has proceeded steadily since 1876, when the 1 rate was 36.3, with the exception of temporary, set-backs in 1891 and ' 1895. . ~ There can be no'doubt that the great fall in marriages in England in 1908 was due to (he depression in trade. The marriage rate per 1000 in the preceding years, the "boom" years, was:— ' ■ . . : " • ■ 1904,- .............. 15.2 1906 .. m 15 6 1905 .........v.7. 15.3 1907 ..... _... 15^8 But k<l9oß the .rate was only H. 9 . ,'
