'North Bast'did not get away very well, and never got into a winning position; though- he finished viry fast, and was just out of a place; To Kahurangi was < one of the first three to leave the , barrier, and tomnieftding' quickly, eOon Had a break Of a coUplo df lengths. He was tiring in the last half furlong, and. had td ho ridden right out to win by a head from Pukewii. The latter is a promising colt, by Waiuku, and with better luck at the 1 staH Would havo beaten To Kahurangi. For the Hack Hurdles .Tftuira; waß id' , slightly .better favourite than Tokoroa, Lothnir and Diplomatic. The, was ft onesided Affair, Tauira, who , got away badly, taking charge at tlife Eccoiid liurdlo, and winning ebsily. As_ previously stated in these columns, T'auira is an ideal stamp of hurdler, but ho was lameaftcr yesterday's race', and will' not bo'.-started to-day.. Tokoroa.' and | Erl King were tho other promising hurdlers in tho field. but both appeared to "bo burst up hv tho fast pace set. Alf tho - acceptors went to tho post for tho Raukawa Cup, for which Sir Tristram was inatalled a firm favourit'e. It took some littlo timo to get. the-field away, &Qd when the tapes wore finally released Maiora ran oit tho side of the track iiftd took no part, in the race. On tho favourite, L. "Wilson redo , a very confident raco, keeping him about ' fourth or -fifth; until Hearing .the straight, when he let him stride along, and tho ' Knrnmu, candidate soon had his opponents . in -difficulties. >Kopu came Svith a very fast < rim in tbo straight, but ho did not, look to ; bo pressing Sir 'Tristram.; Kopu has now, , howover, regained his form' of tho spring, : and should l>o returned a winner niaui

shortly. Mahuta was in at the fnlish; and lUiw that tlio tracks, are soft tho Mahaki hOrso may mako up, for the many disappointing races he has run this season. For the Otiiki Haok Handicap, Goodwin Park was made tlio hottest'favourite of tho day, but though ho was ono of tho first away he I6fct Ills position early, and though ho camo again at tho finish could get no nearer than fourth., Jonkins rode a great raco on Cpronotted, and stealing a march at tho homo turn, rodo a vigorous finish, and just lasted Idng euough to heat King Post. Commencing smartly) King Post liad.a good position in tho early stages, but he drifted back at half the distaste, and . wlion Cairns got him clear of tho t'UCk again ho was too late \to head CorOnett-ed, though in a few more strides ho u'ould havo Won.

ltangikapua, with Oliver in tlio saddlo, was a strong first favourite for the Maiden Flat Race, but r l'e Iloti took charge early, and leading throughout, won easily by a couple of lengths, Montpelier wiis finishing faster than Rangikapua, but Oliver just managed ..to squeeze tho latter into second place. . As In the Cup, the ivliolo of the acceptors started in tfeo RftnglurU Handicap, for which Slinbonnot was a slightly bettor favotirito than Waikaraka, Ballarat, and Gipsy Belle. The field, gave k 'lot of trouble at tile barrier, and ■ eventually Iranui waa. hopelessly; left. Ballarat, Gipsy Belle, and Sunbonnet wore quick to begin, and Gipsy Belle took the lead in the first furlong, - She led into the straight by a conple of lengths, but Jenkins had to handle her judiciously to stall off a late run by.Sunbonnct, v,ho tf&s somewhat unlucky to lose. 1 Pikopo was made favourite for- tho Birthday Welter, and lift j\ist gained the verdict oft the post. Waipunui looked- all over a dinner In the Straight, hut Pikopo iamO wjtli a great finish 'and beat him ofl-tba jMsi, The Winner is a half-brother to Tauirtt, who won the hurdle race earlier in the day.' ' THE RACING AT ELLERSLIE. i Regarding the runniiig of the Great Northern Hurdles, our correspondent telegraphs Uhat Irish,- who made 'all tlio pace, appeared to havo the race won at the last fence, but Bully made ' a flying jump and gained a couple of lengths, which, enabled him to beat Irish'. .Belario fell when he was going very- well, and Creusot broke a blood vessel, and-finished, a'long way baok. Jack Pot, who finished'fourth, ran a good'race for two miles, but he jumped badly, and this lost him ground, for at Ellerslie the hurdles are stiff, and it requires a good fencer-to win the hurdle race as Well' ns the 6teopleohase. The best jumpera engaged in Saturday's steeplechase aro considered to be Kiatcro, Irish, and Le Beau. Le Beau showed too. much pace for any of tho other candidates in 1 the Maiden Steeples, but To-Arai gave the impression that ho will do better in his next attempt over big country-. In tho Jervois Handicap, Miscast again got 1 away badly, otherwiso ho would probably have won. W, /Young met with an accident through iWaiono falling in tho Maiden Hurdles, and the Feildinjr jockey ; was -removed to the hospital suffering from internal injuries, whioh, however) are not considered serious. - • OUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S WINTER MEETINC.
