FEATHERSTON
Tha local volunteers held a successful par T ade under Lieutenant Saunders on Tuesday night. A class of instruction for signalling work was formeij, Mr. Wilton, of Invercargill, consenting. to undertake the duties of instructor. The company is fortunate in securing the services .of an enthusiastic volunteer like.Mr. "Wilson. He held a similar .position in the company at Invercargill of which he was a member. ' At a meeting aftor the parade it was decided to hold a military Dall on July 15. Sergeant G. Walker was elected secretary with Sergeant A. I'. lioydbouso as assistant secretary- Sorgeants Walker, Roydhouse, and Tricker were appointed M.C.'s. It was decided to obtain the services of Mrs. A. Burt (piano), L. Sorenson (violin), and C. Burt (cornet) as musicians. To-day an Oriental team. from Wellington play the Liberals on the Reserve here.
FEILDING.
There were registered last month at the Foilding Post Office' sixteen births, five marriages, and two deaths. Activity on tho.part of- : residents in making sewage connections has been in evidenco during the past fow weeks. This is said to be duo to tho action of tho resident engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche) in prosecuting defaulting property owners. At the meeting of tho Fire Board yesterday Mr. Trewin proposed tho following motion:— "That this board wishos to-place on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered to tho hoard by Mr. Pirani while acting in the position of chairman,'and secretary of tho board." Mr. Trewin said that Mr. Pirani had given a great deal of his time and his woll-known energy to the board, and had, moreover, filled the position of secretary arid chairman for some months without fee or reward. Mr. E. Goodbehere, who succeeded Mr. Pirani- as chairman, seconded tho motion. He said that there was a feeling at tho Borough Council meeting that Mr. Pirani should be re-elected, and the only reason whv ho was not elected was that tho members of the. council thought that they should elect their own members first. The motion was carried unanimously. The Fire Board's estimates for the ensuing year are as follow:—Salaries: Superintendent, £40; deputy superintendent, £20; secretary, £25. Wages: Firemen • and boot money. £40; rent of station, £20; horse hire, £25; new plant and uniforms, £60; petty cash, £5; telephone,, £7 10s.; accident insurance premium, £10. Subscriptions: U.F.8.A., £21 10s.; lighting, £5; land and building firebell tower, £200;, total, £460.

, At the Otaki S.M. Court yesterday Mary Ackerman was convicted and, sentenced to fourteen days'/imprisonment for drunkenness. 1 i} or refusing to leave the premises of her husband (divorced), sho was convicted and discharged. Fred. Potts, convicted of insobriety, was lined 55., with the usual alternative. For being on: licensed premises after hours, A M Meekan was fined 10s. and costs 7s. Meredith Fitzsimmons, charged' with driving at night without lights, was fined ss.'and costs I s :,.■ iwo Kikorangi settlers were fined for failing to send their Children to school.
GREYTOWN,
'.The Greytown Gun Club held their championship meeting, on the Recreation- Reserve, here on, Tuesday and Wednesday, when there was a very good muster of shooting men from all parts. Tho £100 Handicap was won' by J. Simpson, of Papanui, with birds. i.Skippage, of Featlierston, was second with 24 birds; and C. Burt'third with birds. Ihe first : sweepstake' of ten birds was won by £>. Fraser, with ten, and Messrs. C. Burt, H. Jensen, S. Scott, and J. La<>renson were next in order, with .nine bir<fs each. , The second sweepstake was won bj C. Burt, with ten breaks, and H. Jensen and R. J, Flemming second and third with nine birds each, 'xhe championship match lvas fired on Wednesday morning, and was won by last year's champion, Mr. D. Fraser, of Etororata, who still j rotains the medal which was presented by Mr, W. C. Buchanan, M.P. Tlie following are the scores for the championship match:—Mr. D. Fraser, Hororata,\26 birds,. 60 . per cent, of stakes; H. Jensen, Carterton, 25 birds, 25 per cent, of stakes ;-T.C. : Irving, Greytown, 22 birds, 15 pqr; cent! of'.stakes. The weather for the two days was everything that could be wished for. . .' The nominations for the South Wairarapa Trotting meeting this year are said to constitute'a record.
CARTERTON
Reporting on the Marquis of Normanby Hotel, Carterton, at its annual meeting yesterday, tho 'Wairarapa Licensing Committee stated that it had been tho intention -of-the Bench to enforce re-building of the premises, which were old, but in face of tho. present trend of public opinion on -tile matter of liquor, the Bench hardly felt justified in pushing a matter ;which at tho end of'three years might end disastrously for the licensee. The house was exceedingly well conducted, and ono of tho very best in tlio \Vtiirarapa. Mr. Halley was to be complimented upon theimprovements carried out. '-If ,tho public opinion 011 liquor changed before the next annual meeting of the Bench, the order to rebuild. would bo enforced. Tho license-was granted unconditionally. The Carterton Methodist' Band of Hope opened its session on Tuosday evening, when the attendance was fair, tho. chair being occupied by the Bcv. AV. J. Elliott. An entertaining programme was' gone through, after .which tho following officers were elected:—President,'Rev. \V. J. Elliott; vice-presidents, Messrs. D.:T. King, and G. Butler; secretary, Mr. W. Stevens; treaisurer, Mr. P. Andrews; organist, Miss Andrews ; assistant Jliss E. Butler • committee, oilicers ex officio, and Miss ButZillwood, Krahagon, Mansfield (2), Martin, and Messrs. T. W. Foster, and H. Andrews. It was decided to.- meet fortnightly, and Misses Butler, King, and Andrews (2), and Stevens. , were appointed 'a committee to prepare the next 1 programme.
In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, be-! fore Justicos ,of tho Peace, a man named Howson, arrested at Pahiatua, oh a chargo of false .pretences, was remanded for a week, the police stating that'other charges wore pending against accused. To-day a team of Boy "Scouts, of the first Carterton troop, participate in a dispatch raco from Masterton to Carterton. One lad is to - proceed to Masterton by the 11.30 train, and receive an envelope stamped by the Masterton Post Office by 2 o'clock. Tho rest of the team, under the. coutral of Assistant Scoutmaster A. 'S. Judd, are to proceed per bicycle towards Masterton, boys being stationed -one mile from point I(dt point. At a given time tho boy at Masterton is to commence to run to Carterton Having run his mile, ho will: mount his bicycle-and ride on to Carterton. This programme being carried' out, every boy having run his mile, will cycle the'rest of tho distance home. .
LEVIN.
The Lovin Frivolity, Jlinstrel, and Variety Company made ,their bow to tho public for tho lirsb time on Tuesday evening, When a large audience assembled in the Town Hall. Tho proceeds are to bo handed over to tho fund for re-starting the Levin Town Board, and as a result of tho initial effort a goodly sum ougiit to ho availablo. An orchestra, consisting of Messrs. W. W. Moon (first , violin). J. Kearsley, and C. Elkins (second violins), C. Lollcy ('cello), Woods (clarinot), F.Woodmass (cornet), and Arthur James (piano), and Mr. Kearsley (bells and triangle) gave, sovoral overtures. Songs •' wore sung by Miss Lydia Carmont, the Misses Cook, Sirs.' May, Messrs. C. Osborne, C. Raleigh, G? Clifford, B. Barton, D. Carrington, H.' Charlesoney, D: Matlieson, G. Honour, H. Charlosworth, W. Adsitt, F. Woodmass, and A. Carrutliers. Mr. ,1. Kearsley acted as accompanist to the singers. A trio by . Messrs. F. J. Glaokiu'(banjo), Matheson, and ; Carrulliers (mandolines) was well received. The corner men were: Bones, Mr. Stan. Morgan; tarnbo, Sir. F. Woodmass. Mr. G-eorgo ! Clifford acted as business and stage manager.
The scenery -was the work of-Mt. R. Tonnent. Tlie entertainment is also to be given at Foxton, Otaki, Shannon, and Manakau, then a return will be played at Levin. The following havo been nominated for the vacancy in Levin Borough Council caused by tihe resignation of Mr. 13. F. Levy:—Albert Thorn e, projwscd by Messrs. W. Palmer and G. Cameron; P. L. .Arcus, proposed by Messrs! Peter Stewart and G. Cameron; T. A. Williams, proposed by Messrs. Peter Bartholomew and W. W. Smitbson, and by Messrs. W. Palmer and G. IC Douglas: W. H. Galliclmn, proposed by Messrs. G. Oamoron, C. ['aimer, 11. C. Gapper, J. Teal, and P L. Arcus. The election takes place on' Wednesday next. ' The Presbyterian Social and Literary Society met 011 Tuesday evening in .the church, tho Rov. J. White presiding. A debate on "Is Smoking Injurious?" was tho topic for the ovening. -Mr. A. E. H-aswell opened for tho affirmative, and Mr. J. Roberston for the negative. After a spirited discussion, the affirmative was carried by a substantial majority, though a number did not vote.
