CITY ABATTOIRS.
FEES AND REGULATIONS. ESTIMATED KECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE. The fees, regulations, etc., in connection with the city abattoirs, now nearing completion, came up for consideration at last night's meeting of the City Council. Tho Abattoirs, Milk Supply, and Pnblio Health Committee recommended: That the draft by-law regulating the abattoir and sale oi meat, and amended by the committee after consultation with Mr. Ilcakes, and the master butchers of Wellington, bo adopted. The fees for inspection and the use of tho abattoir will bo as follow:—For every head of large cattle, other than calves, 6d.; for every calf, 3d.; for every sheep and lamb, 4d.; for every pig, 6d. It is provided that no person shall carry on business in the city as a butcher or vendor or purveyor of meat, or shall, directly or indirectly, supply meat to any of the inhabitants of the city, unless he Bhall have a \ license to do .so, issued by the' council. For every such license 10s. shall be paid to the town clerk or other person appointed by the council to receive the same; and for every day upon which such person shall carry on such business as aforesaid, or shall directly or indirectly supply meat as aforesaid without such license, shall be. guilty of an offence. Licenses shall bo issued annually, on the first day of December, and may he issued for part of a year. The council Bhall, _ subject to tho provisions hereof, such licenso to any applicant who shall have, in tho city or elsewhere, a proper shop or place for tho sale of meat; provided that such shop shall not be deemed to bo a proper shop or place for tho sale of meat unless and until the'same has been certified as a proper shop or place by the inspector. Any person who shall sell or expose for sale meat not killed in a registered abattoir or licensed meat export slaughterhouse shall be guilty of an offence against the by-law; provided that nothing in the by-law contained shall be deemed to prohibit tho salo within tho city of meat killed outsido the city, if it has been killed, inspected, and passed in accordance with the provisions of the Act. Councillor ShirtclilTe, -chairman of the committee, read an estimate of tho receipts and expenditure for the first twelve months, showing that the income should be £2554 10s. Tho expenditure should be .£2120, mado up as follows:—lnterest and sinking fund on a loan of .£16,000, .£960; manager, ,£250; inspection fees, £360; caretaker's salary, £150; upkeep, £300; electrio power, £150; surplus, £434, If it was found that the rates were too high, it would be a simple matter to reduce them. He was in favour of having the slaughtering done by contract. * , The by-law will come up for. confirmation at nest meeting of the council.
