The Biological Division of the New. Zealand -Department of : Agriculture'ih a quiet way is. doing good work in tho distribution of friendly insects. It has introduced, among other, valuable insects,: two .lady birds imported from America, for the- destruction of woolly aphis. Those are reported to liavo practically cleared the aphis pest from New Zealand orchardsj'.'in.,which very* susceptible varieties of .apple trees-_are -grown., But these lady. birds.appear to'have quite escaped ■the'. notic6.;.of .that -great'insect hunter, Mr. George Compere,' of; Western- Australia, for in /Ins -his, recent ..friendly-insect-gathering tour.ylie says;'';in', regard-.to woolly, aphis"l'spent a great deal of time in searching for an enemy of this much-dreaded apnlo pest, but did not discover anything of importance. I think we will, have to carry tho search for this parasite into countries that have, yet beou unvisited, such as Russia, Siberia,-and''Persia.",-
