The report, of the -commission from tho Presbytery'in connection with Knox'Church has. been submitted to the congregation by .the Rev. A. T.- Thompson. Tho report was - considered highly satisfactory, and contained eulogistic reference to' tho progress of tho Church during the . past year.

Mr. 31. Vy. Poley, who has been secretary to the Horowhenua Boating Club for Bomo time, having accepted an appointment at Napier; will leave Levin in a few days. He is to bo entertained by the club at a smoko concert on Thursday evening.: Mr. Polev, who has also acted as secretary to the Levin Amateur Dramatic Society, will bo much missed, by. these.. bodies, .as he has worked hard for (tho success of both. Tho good wishes of his' many friends will follow hif to his new sphere. At,a meeting of the Boatirfg Club, on ; Friday ovening. Mr. Poley formally resigned the secretaryship, and Mr; R. Burgo was appointed .to tho position. The. Levin Rovers Hockey Club will receive a visit on Thursday from the Thorndon Hockey Club (Wellington). A public meeting was' hold at ' Wereroa Hall on Friday evening, for the purposo of arranging the programme for the projected .visit of Sir Joseph WaTd, who is. coming to open the now post office at Woreroa. Tho meeting was called by, the Mayor of Levin (Mr. B. R. Gardener), but only,a small attendance was present. In the course of his remarks, the Mayor stated that the Prime Minister had only once previously visited Levin, and so had very little idea of its resources. Ho would like to take Sir Joseph to the'lake, the Boys' Training-Farm, tho State Farm, and other places of interest. He also suggested that 'they should put in a word p for tho construction of tho LevinGreatford ' railway, Snd the reservation of tho lake, Mr. P. 13. Roe moved that a Reception Committee be appointed, to consist of the Mayor, Messrs. J. M'Leavey, , P. Bartholomew, H. J.. Richards, Dr., Macken;zio, Major Burlinson, arid the mover. Major Burlinson Seconded the motion,, and endorsed the Mayor's suggestions.; Ho hoped that an opportunity would be, given for presenting tho. Kebbell <Shield, -won this year by the Training Farm cadets. The motion was unanimously adopted.; .The Methodist Guild held a very successful, social oa'Friday evening. The.Levin Domain Board met on Friday, 'Mr! Peter Stewart .presiding. Other members ; present ;wore:. ,Messrs. . W. -C. - Nation; J. Prouse, R.; Prouse, F. O. -Smith, ;P. L. Arcus, and W. G. Adkin. The .last-named four aro now members, and -were welcomed by the chairman. It was reported that, of .the-trees, planted last season, aboilt one-third' had died, and some discussion took' place as to the i.most; suitable trees for planting. Mr. R. Prouse suggested totara and rimu, as s being excellent both for beauty and shelter.- Some land adjoining the domain had been recommended for acquirement, but the Government would only purchase if itho residents' subscribed (C for £. Mr." J. Prouse thought that tho Borough . and County Councils ought to move in tho matter.. It ~wonld -be a valuable acquisition if the strip of bush between* the domain and 'tho-race-course reserve and the: lake conld be obtained. It ,was decided to meet next Wednesday on tho domain, in order to carry out an inspection.

Tho. ordinary meeting 'of the Wairarapa south. County. Council wcis hold on ■ Saturday,' Councillor W. Porry presiding. The ' trezjsurer reported a debit balance of £197 8s 5d.. and accounts amounting to £341 17s. 8d wore passed for payment. It was resolved to sue for all outstanding rates before hert .mooting. E. T.. Phelps, wrote 'complaining a dram which was causing damage to bis .property. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman. Inspector Miller toported that five eases of infectious diseases had occurred in the county, and proper precautions had. been taken in all cases. Complaints had been received about .the offensive smell emanating from'the abattoirs at Wameawa, and the matter was now in the hands of tho Health Department. The secretary; of the -Masterton- Private Telephone Committee wrote asking the .council to move in the matter of . getting legislature to give local bodies power to frame by-laws to control the, working of privato telephone lines, or to dedicate their: power to a committee appointed by the council. It; was decided to- hold . tho .matter ovor, pending further information'on tho working of 1 privato lines. The Department l of' Hospitals and Charitable Aidi wrote .acknowledging the council's protest against the levy required, of it, and askinc that the council should.await .the result of.'the Masterton Council's protest. The Martinborough Town Board, Featherston County; Council, and Greytown Borough v Counoil forwarded their contributions to-V wards the licensing election expenses, each protesting against the excessive' cost. - It was resolved to forward copies of the protests to the chief electoral officer. Mr. W. G. Buchanan, M.P., wrote that the proposal of the Wober Comity Council, regarding burnt papa, would have his active support. The Masterton County Council forwarded details of .expenditure on the \Vaingawa Bridge upkeepi thiscouncil's sharo for the period from April;'l9oß, to May, 1909, being £16 Is. Id. The Counties' Association wrote that they had given tho opinion that County Councils camo under the scope of arbitration awards. It was resolved to visit the Waiohino in reference to certain protective works asked for by tho settlers. The engineer's report was read and adopted. A benefit social, in aid of the Sewell family, is to be held on June 8, at Clareville. Mr. J. M. Beechey.of Dalefield, who has been appointed headmaster of the Clarcvillo Sohool, was entortained at a sendl-ofi social on Friday evening) when complimentary speeches were made touching his twenty years' work at the school. During tho -proceedings,'Mr; M.-T. West, on bohalf of tho residonts of the district, presented the guest of the evening with a handsome gold watch, suitably inscribed. > The dairy herds of Messrs. E. Aplin, and J. Russell, who provide the town with milk, have been tested by tho Government Inspector, and passed it successfully.
