CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. UNITED DEFEATS KAItORI. ■ The championship matchcs wore continued on Saturday aUeruoon, The surprise of tbo day was the mutch' between United and Ivaron. In view of United's defeat by Y.M.C.A.. on.th« opening day, this contest was looked forward to with more than ordinary interest. The duel was expected to be very keen with, perhaps the odds slightly in favour of Karori, but tho wearers of tho red and white jersevs havo bcon improving rapidly' in form; and they wore at their best on Saturday, Detailed results ara . appended:— - " UNITED (5) V. KARORI (1). "Past and furious" were tho principal characteristics of tho old time battle between , United and Karori, clayed on No. 1 ground, Day's Bay. From the bully-off, it was seen that both teams were'out to wini and th# paca never slackened. ' United attacked from the jump, and scored within the first two minutos. Inside the circle, Elliott passed to Smythc, who passed to Hollis, who hit in after a soramblo at tho posts. In eight minutes from tho start another United goal was scored, Organ passing to Mills; who sent on promptly to Hollis, the last-named scoring by a rapid sjioL 2—o. Then Karon's opportunity came. G. Davies carried throiigh the defending reds, but Dwyer, in goal, was ready for him, and ?. avc ?- brilliantly..v After fifteen minutes, on the defensive Karori put on a very pretty rush, and a score was only prevented by Hickson Jutting, behind. A few minutes before halftime, Aslibolt hit right down tho field, but instead of allowing the ball to go behind, the Karori goalkeeper unwisely found tho' lino, i where, frrfm the tlirow-in, Elliott was enabled to make the score 3'nil.-. Tho second spell started off with equal vigour. Karori presently made a fine rush down tho field. A goal, seemed- imminent, but. just at the critical moment,, Dwyer kicked behind. United now came, strongly again, and the fourth goal was scored by Organ/who received tho»ball from Smytho. Ten minutes before time, Karori scorcd their first goal. They, made a determined-attack, and though Dwyer saved , ■ tlireo times, G. Davies was. eventually able to shoot through.' T. Spiers, Knrori's left fullback, now showed up in somo excellent defon-' sive work, but the United attack was not to bo denied. Organ took, charge, and passed to Mills, the latter sending. on to . Elliott, who scored by a brilliant shot. A moment later;. G. Davies shot through' for Karori, but ho - was off-side. . 1 _ The United back division was strengthened by F. Ashbolt, who played in the absence of Von Stunner..' It also included Ashbolt,- Hick- ' sod. and Dwyer, : *ho : all played brilliantly. The half-line in (jood form. Day, left-half, , and King, centre, eiving excellent displays. The forward- lino,, also,; was at its best, and put iu some fine combined rushes. Karori'a forward line, too, was very fair, G, Davies 1 in particular ■ being «vor alert. and vigorous whether attacking or defending. . The Karori defence, was somewhat weak. Mr. R. L. Jones controlled the game. Y.M.C.A. (2) V. VICTORIA COLLEGE (1). Play ' started l , with - the. Groens '' attacking strongly,, and evidently bent on taking their opponents by. main force. After about iiftoen minutes of .sustained attack by 'the .Collegetho Y.M.'s started in, but found; some good - hitters amongst their..opponents. -The, first spell ■ consequently saw some exciting' play, especially towards tho close, when tho Greens; made a .great attack on their opponents- 'left... wing,, . getting . within tho.; circle. A'* strugglo ensued,- and; presently Borlo scorcd for .College: In .tho second ;spell Y.M.'V at-'i. tacked solidly,;' and Loader, taking play into • the enemy's territory, shot a. goal. . Y.M.'s ■ mado another rally, and . then. Cardo came to : light with a beautiful goal,: and tho whistle ' sounded'soon after. For tho winners, Loader, played. a solid game: and. Carde likewise. -For , the; losers Smith, centro-half, Monhghan, right : full-back,- and Strack, leach did his 6hare to- - wards upholding the honour of the team. Mr, Soutlxwick -was referee, v *.' . . ■ . WESLEY (7) V. THORNDON (0), • On No. 3 Ground, Day's Bay, Thorndott were defeated by Wesley. Wesley's combination was mostly good, and this, as always must bo the case when tho opposing team . lacks' this important feature, won them the game. To say , that Thorndon have not sonic very fine individual, players would be a mis-. 1 tako, but generally,, speaking, they seem to bo very weak in the forwards. Several .chancos were Spoilt on Saturday' simply bcckuso the latter not pass, . but ■ waritod to carry the ball into the net -without assistance. The first spell had . hardly started when Wesley put Thorndon .on their mettle, a goal being missed only by inches. Wesley's forwards; who wore playing in fino- stylo, and passing neatly, notched their . first goal about halfway through the spoil, , Smith claiming tho honour. Thorndon, aroused by their' deficionoy, now made: an inspection of their opponents' twonty-five, but' Wesley immediate}? Bhowed that they could defend; as well as at-. tack. Returning ;to tho- attack tho latter : missed, several chances'boforo tho end of the spell, which; ended with tho. scoro 6till it one to nil;. The second 6pcll saw Thorndon making things warm,, but, time and again,- they lost tlioir chanco, and IVcsloy presently car-, riod play to Thorndon's end of tho ground. Hero some, fino , defonco was shown by WiMams and Hobrnan, and it was some time before Smith got a chance to register his second goal. In the last quarter of an hour Wesley ' sent the ball fewer, than five times. . Goals for Wesley were secwed by Smith (2), Ctirgenven (2), Koysi Birch," and Dixon; the game ending with -Wesley,. 7 and Thorndon nil. Mr. J. Popo was tho referee. . '. VIVIAN (2) V. WELLINGTON (1). A fast and 1 interesting contest took' place'/ on No. 1 Ground,. Kelburno Park, between Wellington and Vivian,'the' latter winning by 2 to 1. In the'first spoil tho \rinniers had the advantage, and 600n registered a goal. Collins was the first to notch a score for them, and some time afterwards Forsyth followed, th» total then' reading:—Vivian 2, Wellington nil. Tho odds altered somewhat in tho latter halt but Wellington: were unable to equalise the -scores. Their only goal was made by Walton, and, though they had further opportunities of adding, to the tally, tho shots invariably missed'tho posts.. ' , . ■; JUNIOR GAMES. A very' fast and : open gamo resulted from tho meeting of Victoria College A and Wesley 'teams on . So. 4\ Ground,: Day's Bay.' Wesley : - went strongly n» the beginning, but were, not able to maintain their attack, and also lost many opportunities through faulty shooting.' The first spell ended with tho score at 4 to nil- in 1 favour of College, but' Wesley managed ■to get two goals past tho Collcgo dofeuco in , the second spell; Several of the players met with rather nasty. accidents owing to tho bumpy state of.-thp ground. Oram (i), ana Brodie (2)' were tho soorers for the winners.' - St. Patrick's Old, Boys scorcd a victory over Petono, winning ,by 3 goals to 1. W. Ryan (2) and Francis' (1). scored for the winners'.
