ASSISTANT MASTERS' ASSOCIATION. A preliminary meeting of assistant masters I of secondary schools was held at Wellington College yesterday to consider proposals for the organisation of a New Zealand Secondary Schools' Assistant Masters' Association. .Mr. A. Heine presided. The attendance was'representative of various secondary institutions'front Auckland to Otago, Correspondence was received from eighteen !' secondary schools' .endorsing the aims of the meeting. As a result of the conference, a draft constitution was agreed upon, and the following dooision arrived at:— : ■'■•■' Secondary school male or female assistants, as defined by the Education Act, 190S, to be eligible for membership, the first annual general meeting of tho association to bo held in May, 1910, at ..Wellington, at which centre'tho headquarters of the cxecutivo committee would bo situated. . The' following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President. Mr. E. W. Andrews, Napier; vice-president, Mr. H. J. D. Malum, Auckland; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R., E. Rndniait, Wellington; executive council, Messrs. R. A. M'Culloiiffh (Dnncdin), A'. Heine and A. C'Gilford (Wellington), and Miss Hondcrson (Christchurch); auditor, Mri G. Uttley (Waitaki). .". " , ■.■'.<■' ■'■■:. . Tho following resolutions were adopted:— That tho executive, after consulting iho headmasters, should take steps to try and havo the provisions of tho Teachers' Appeal. Act extended to include secondary school teachers. That the Minister for Education bo approached with a view to comparing a teachers' retiring allowance, on tho average of his throe years' liiglicss salary, and also with regard to a lower optional retiring ago. That certain anomalies in the privileges, of cadet officers holding substantive commissions be brought to the notice of the Defence authorities ,nhd that suggestions bo raado 'to lessen the large amount of unnecessary clerical work entailed on cadet officers in making up returns. Votes of thanks to Mr.'Andrews, tho organiser of. tlio-.a'ssociation. to. Mr. J. P.
