NOTES ON THE RACING.
fBl GtENCOB.I
, Wanganul, May 22. Considering the unsettled state of tho weather during tho past woek, tho Wanganul Jockey Club wore fortunate in securing a fine afternoon for the first day of tho winter meeting, and the consequence was a largo attendance. Naturally the track was heavy, but the fields in all the.races were very big. Backers were mostly at sea over the results,' tho first and last races being the only ones in whicli well-backed horeee triumphed.
There were an unusual number of falls in the jumping events, but fortunately none of the jocireye was seriously injured. A. M'Connon received a large scalp wound as a result of ,a fall off Playmate in the Steeplechase, and he again mot with an accident on Esmoor in tho Century Hurdles. Cairns, the rider of Aorangi, and Delanoy, tho ridetf of Nogi, received facial bruises, and several others escaped with a shaking.
Master Douglas, one of the most promising of.this season's hurdlers, broke his leg as tho result of a fall in the Century Hurdles, and had to be shot. i
The fourteen acceptors all Btarted in tho Wanganui Steeplechase, but the country proved very stiff; and only five got safely round. Thoso that finished were aged horses, while the names of the placed horses —Moccasin, Tilson, and Kiatere—clearly demonstrate that old and experienced 'chasers are the best for stiff country. Jackpot, the favourite, looked a certain winner when ho lost his ridft- six furlongs from homo. He bad been jumping beautifully and had a big break on his field and looked to be going well, bnt he dipped after landing and D. Watt was easily unseated. It was a good race over the last part between- Moccasin and Tilson, but tho former had been jumping cleverly, and had more left in him when it came to the final pinch. ' Kiatero did .well; to . finish third with his weight, and is quite in his pnmo as a 'chaser yet. Ballanoe and Oryx' were a , long way behind the placed horses, and Pawa, who was pulled up, was too far away to persevere till the end. \ Earns, the National winner, was expected to got round but he was among tie fallen. _A dozen horses contested tho Century which was brimful of accidents. First, Ennoor fell then Snip, then Master Douglas, and then Aorangi. Master Douglas !r d J I '^ a t> ut at tho in front of the stand he jumped ori the mare's quarters S d V»™E «»ra. fractured his leg. Maidl led till three fnrionga from home, when she gave place to Belano and Compass It was an interesting finish between this pair' and Aavier, but Belano was first over the last hurdle, and finishing full of running, won TOE ? f ?J t ?i ly *, e ? OU $ l - Whatakura.was fourth and Maidi fifth. %aipu and Prospector wore right out of tho hunt, and the fatter is in nothing like the condition ho was' in this time -last year, when ho won tho May Hurdles. i . J "So far as the Connolly Handicap was concerned Gwendolma wastheonly ono in it at ~ , , - woodhey and Boosevelt were well backed, but- tho former, finished badlyj and the latter was handicapped by the goMahuta found the soft track to hie liking, and mado most of the pace, but died away in the last furlong, just lasting long enough'to'finish second. .■ It is /interesting to note that tho .throe jumpers from Riccarton all fell,in their racos, but, Gwondolina, the only > Riccarton. candidate.racing on the flat, won her race. Irish Eifle had an easy win in, the Boroogh Handicap, IV Price standing off Ballarat to ride Mr. Bull's horse. Mendip, cleverly handled by Jenkins.' scored nicoly. in the last event..'-. . ' Moccasin's win was not the only one credited to a Hutt-trained horse, as' Waiata scored for Mr, A. Peters in the Electric Hack, j : Several of the jurnpa on the .Wangonni oourse are to be considerably modified before the racing commoncee' on Monday. Tho fact that only five out of fourteen starters completed the course in tJro bis jumping ovont to-day probably influenced the stewards in ordering -them to bo lowered.
