THE LOCAL ARItANGEMENTS, Monday next, May 24; the • anniversary of tho birth of the late Qucoil Victoria, is Empire Day, and will be observed in the public schools and the Departmental:offices,, as a public .holiday. ■ Tho lady members of tho Navy League will meet in No. 1 Committee Room, Town Hill, this morning, to arrange; for floral tributes' to lie placed on tlie Queen's fjtatuo,- in Post Ollico' Square.. • . . : So. far as ceremonial observanoo on the part of the schools is concerned, that will be left,as ■ iii previous years, in tho hands of tho individual.schools. At tie Training College,, Tliorndon, it is understood that the- headmaster lias prepared a special "Empire Day" syllabus of _ work for. the wholo woek, the various 'Subjects of instruction being- treated with special reference to - Imperial matters. Mount Cook School-antiqipated tho occasion : by parading tho cadets and saluting tho flag yesterday afternoon. No holiday will he observed at Newtown District. High School, on account of tho cessation of work for the three -last days of tho week, in ordor to hold a ba7«oar in aid of tho school funds. It is improbable that any general demonstration will tako plaoo,- most of tho schools preferring to take tne holiday. '■ The anmial> Imperial Riflo Match for the "Daily Mail" Empire Day Cup, and tho Sohumaoher Cup, will be fired throughout the British dominions on Monday, although many of tho competing teams will no doubt avail themselves of the eonccssion in the rules, which allows the firing to toko plac* to-day (May 22). The Karori Rifle Club is competing, and will shoot oif at Polhill Gully <rims onmmnncinp, at 7. tun.
