About 2 a.m. yesterday tho Anchor Company's new Btcamor Waimea, from Nelson, arrived in Sort, and berthed at the Queen's Wharf. 'Ycatcray morning sho attraotcd muoh attention before being placed'on the slip. Tho now vessel is a Bteol twin-screw' Steamer, and was. built by Messrs. Mackie and. Thompson, Ltd., 6f Govan, Scotland. Her dimensions are as follow:— Length, b.p.,. 160 ft.: depth moulded, - 10ft. 9in.; gross' tonnage, 454 tons. Engines: two seta, cylinders 11, IV, and 28, by 2lin. stroke; 1601b. working pressure. The ostimatcd: indicated horsepower' is 600,' and tho speed is 91 knots. The engines were built by Messrs. Hos3 and Duncan, Govan. The vessel wis designed •by and constructed under the supervision of Mr. J. W. ■Brown, tho ownors'. superintendent engineer-'for tho coastal trade. ; She is especially adapted for bar harbour work. .There arc two largo hatchways, with two of Clark-Chapman's, Btcam winches at each hatch for;tho rapid handling of cargo. The formast is. of steel, fitted'with exceptionally, strong gear for handling heavy lifts. Steam steering' gear and windlass' have boon, installed. Electric light is fitted throughout. 'Tho vessel has a raised quarter dock and forecastle, with: a saloon amidships. 'Sho will not carry any passengers.' Captain Irvine, who brought the Waimea to Nelson, said that sho was one of the best ships of her size and class ho had yet brought to: New Zealand. The engines ran ' from Greenock to Nelson without • stopping at sea.
