ELECTRIC LIGHTING.

DEPARTMENT'S ANNUAL BETURNS. , KET'STIKPUtS; A 5272. ~ The- annua] report and balance-sheet of the Coijioration Electric Lighting Department has bean approved by the Tramway and Power Stations Committee. "The gross revenue from private and public lighting and power supply tor the year amounted to .6iU2l, being an inarease of MSbi over the previous year (states Mr. Stuart Richardson, engineer and manager). This is very satisfactory, as, when comparing with last year, it must be remembered that the best period in that year's output was under the late company's control, when the gross charge per unit for light was Is., as against our charge of lijd. The working expenses amounted to £25,018, or £2262 more than last year, which is principally accounted for by the extra rental and rates,, amounting' to 1557, now paid to the district fund account for the frontage to Mercer. Street taken for building extensions to the station, and additional frontages to Harris Street for storing material.' After meeting interest charges on debentures,' amounting, to .£6473, setting aside £3090 sinking fund in redemption of debentures, and charging £5468 depreciation against revenue, the net surplus on the year's working amounted'to £1272. "The number of units used by Consumers for private and public lighting and power supply during the year totalled an increase of 88,712 as compared with the previous year. The totar number of-consumers at March 31 last amounted to 4136, of which 3821 were lighting, 244 power, and 71 radiator connections. This is an increase of 453 connections for the year,'and shows that' electricity for lighting and power purposes is greatly increasing in ■popularity. As previously referred to in my reports, the metallic filament lamps, which are great current savers to the consumer, will be ! larger factor fn the extended use of electricity for lighting by. the general, public, and will ultimately mean increased output from total is made ur•« .faWPrivate lighting, £37,836: public lighting £1118; power and heating supply, *51«. meter re The principal items in tho expenditure are; Salariei, £4004; fuel, £10,216; maintenance of station plant £2010.
