ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
AN OLD MAN'S DEATH. • An inquest was held yesterday afternoon by Dr., A. M'Arthur, S.M., coroner, /concerning tho sudden death of the old man Arthur l'ickorill. Evidenco, was called to show that deceased, who was about 65! years of iage, kept a grocer's store atMaranui, and wob found dead in bed at 10 a.m. on Monday. He lived by himself, and had not been seen about since Saturday evening, when he, was in his usual cheery state. The fact that he was not seen on Sunday was not unusual, and no one took any notice of his absence 'until Monday morning began' to' 'advance, and the shop still remained shut. Dr. Fyffo stated that ho made a postmortem examination of the body, and found it to be well nourished. Thero were no marks of violence. Tho_causo of death was early pnoumoriia, with dilation of the heart. Constable Sims deposed that he wont to Maranui shortly 10. a.m. on Monday. He found deceased's'premises securely locked up, and on forcing an ontrance fsaw the old man lying dead in his bed, having apparently died in his sleep some honrs before. Wit-, ness romowd the, body to the morgue. Deceased had no known relatives in the Dominion, but amongst his personal effects was a letter from a brother in Nottingham, dated April, 1907, and a second letter: dated January, 1904, from another brother in,tho same place. .. ~ • . • A verdict was returned in accordance withi tho medical evidence. , CITY ACCIDENTS. , ■, / Tho two firemen who wore injured at tho firo at Oriental. MOTOR VERSUS VEHICLE. / Sergeant , Miller and Mrs. Millor,' f f Masterton . mot with a severe accident while driving ,from Taueru last Monday evening, ' a motor-car colliding with their vehicle. , Both occupants wore thrown.out heavily on the road, and Mrs. Millor was seriously'injured, whilo the sergeant was considerably bruised and 6hak6n. Both' were brought into Masterton iu tho motor-car, where medical attendance was obtained. . . , '
BOY'S SEVERE EXPERIENCE. (»I TBLEOBAPK—SPECIAL COUBKSrOHDENT.) Palmerston, May 18. A peculiar acoidcnt .happened near lb Matai on Alonday. Mr. Muvorton was driving Itis traction engine and combine to Mr. T. W. Staco's, property, when a boy, named Goorgo Edgecombe, by some moans became entangled in the combine,, and was badly hurt.. Mr. Milvortori. saw .tho boy before tho accident, but did not see him go near the machinery; A little later, some men passing by found the boy lying on tho road, and Weeding profusely. He was. taken into Mrs. M'Lcavoy's residonco close by, and thou stated that he had been run over by tho combine. On Mr. Milvorton being informed of tho accident,'ho did all ho could for tho suffering lad. Be was taken to the hospital in Dr. Martin's motor-car, whoro it was found that ho had been very badly bruised about tho arms, and had an anklo broken. He is now* progressing satisfactorily. FOUND AT FAREWELL SPIT,. (Br TKtEOUAPH—rKESS ASSOCIATION.) Nelson, May 18. Tho Canadian canoe in which tho missing camping party at Rabbit Island—Mr. G. \V. Lighlband, of Brightwatcr, and H. D. Jackson, son of Mr. Ralph Jackson, of Nolson— sot out a fortnight ago, has been found washed up at Farewell Spit. All hope of finding the party alive is now abandoned.
