Tho 'number of cases, both civil and crim- . inal, to bo dealt with at tho Auckland Suprome Court during the next fow weeks con-' stitutes something in' tho nature of a record. On Friday afternoon 28 prisoners, who pleaded guilty in tho lower Court to various offences, were brought up for sentence. The civil sittings commence before Mr. Justice Edwards on Monday. The list comprises 19 cases in all. Of' these, four cases are to be decided by common juries' of twelve, two by , common juries of four, and the remainder by .his Honour alone. In place of the usual number of ton or twelve for divorce, somo twentyfive, are set down for hearing on the present 1 occasion, making a record. Tho criminal sessions, which commence on , Monday, May 24, also promise 1 to. provido exceptionally-heavy work, some 35 cases hav- | ing already been set down for trial. In con- , nection with the criminal 'caseS, Sir. S. Mays, j of tho Crown Prosecutor's ofiice, attributes the increase to the extra number of "spielers" finding their way into Auckland.
