It was officially announced a week or two -ago by the Howard Smith Company, Ltd.. of Sydney, that there is no foundation r for; tno rumour which has been persistently circulated of late in ahippiug circles to the effect that it was pro* posed to abandon the services between. Sydney and San Francisco, via Auckland, and kriowA as the Australian Mail line (says an exchange). On the .contrary, it is * intended to accelerate the service and to employ larger vessels, with more passenger accommodation. Arrangements had been completed to place, the new Bteamcr. Yoserio on the Australian-line,:but she -was totally loat. Advices, have been received thai Messrs; Andrew Weir and Co., of■ London, who, in conjunction with the Howard Smith Oompany, Ltd.,-conduct the Australian Mail line, have contracted with Messrs.. On March 25 there was. launched at Goole a huge floating pontoon, which Is to carry a large hydraulic hoist. The' vessel, the only one of its kind,in the world, has been' the'order of the Aire and Calder Navigation, and'is specially designed for lifting canal boats laden with coal; which vessels carry' about 40 . tonß. ■ Tho dimensions of the pontoon are:—Length between perpendiculars. 116ft«;>breadth, 46ft.Giit.; moulded depth, 17ft. 11m.'- .When the-hydraulio hoist is erected the craft .'will displace about' 1000 tons. The vessel is peculiar in/.shape, tho principle followed. being that of a dock. Boats, which are to be lifted .bodily out.of tho water by tlic hydraulio hoist, will first bo floated.into the pontoon; the-bottom part of which is sub* merged several feet. The advantage, of course, is that the pontoon can be-moved to different parts of tho docks. The vessel was named Alpha by Mr. "W. Sheepshanks, chairman of the Aire and Calder Navigation. . . -

MASTHEAD SIGNALLING LAMP. Notable steps In regard to Morse signalling by flash lamp havo been taken-'during the past year or two ill the merchant Bervico, and for this reason considerable interest attaches to an electrical signalling lamp, designed to permit tho transmission of long-distance messages. Tho new lamp, which has been invented by Mr. W. E. Gibbings, chief officer.: in one of the Sonth African steamship lines, is designed, to fit over any ship's masthead, thus giving the most elevated 1 position, possible, and-securing at tho samo time, the wido'range which is.so. necessary.. The key or switch is operated from-the bridge or other, convenient position on' deek. 'The lamp consists of 12 flngor bulbs, each about 3in. in length, and of five-candlo power, giving a- light of iO-candle power. Tho bulbs arc enclosed in a hermetically sealed circular dioptric lens of considerable magnifying power. The lower part of tho lamp- consists of a hollow 'brass cone, about 16in. long, which fits over the masthead, taking tho place of the truck''lVis clamped to tho mast <.with a set-screw on the rear part, and fitted with small blocks on either side for signal halyards. The lamp is connected" to: tho operating switch by means of a twin cable, so fittedi as to bo clear cargo gear, and always ready for immediate use. With the ; Gibbings lamp vessolß can 1 speak both before and aftor they have passed each other.—" Sydney Commercial News.' . ' . ' • NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY.
