BUSINESS POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND A COOO BEASON. REMARKS BY HON. O. J. JOHNSTON. (niTsiaaßApn—raiss association—copteiohtJ (Reo. May 15, 0.65 ajnJ Sydnay, May 14. Tho A.M.P. Society hold its sixtieth aa nual meeting to-day. : The president (tho Htin. A. W. Mocks, M.L.G.) said tho society was still making records. Tho interest earned during tho year was £4 9s. 4d. per cent., a drop of 7d. on tho rato of 1907, but the rate had hardened within tho last few months. The Hon. G. J. Johnston, Chairman of tho New Zealand Board, in supporting tho motion for tho adoption of tho report, said that in tli© Dominion tho now. business constituted a record. Comment on tho financial condition of Now Zealand was not infrequent just now. It must bo admitted that tho Dominion Had not' escaped tli© general trado depression, which in somo parts of tho country had, been acoontnatod by dealings in land—agricultural, pastoral, and suburban—which oonld not possibly be. justified unless by tho belief that, whatever ono paid, somo still more confident person would shortly offor moio. But. on tho other hand, Now Zealand had experienced a marvellously favourable season, yielding a prolific lambing, a heavy wool clip, good fruit crops, and an abundant supply of milk. In addition, fhero had 'been- a very important reoovory in tho price of wool. On tho whole, ho thought that tho conditions pointed to a general improvement, and that a reasonable viow was that tho worst trouble is already over, and thai with proper caro thoro is no cause for alarm.
