SUPREME COURT. A NINE MONTHS' SENTENCE. Sentonco was passed yesterday on John Woulfo, who had been found guilty of having attempted to rob a drunken man named Jaraos Thomson at tho Trentham races on April 24. " . In reply to tho usual question, prisoner stated that he did not wish to say anything. Tho Crown Prosecutor mentioned that prisoner belonged to the non-working class. Ho had previously been convicted of oonsorting with thieves, obßceno language, and drunkenness. His Honour (to prisoner): You are sentenced to nine months' jnprisonment with hard labour. THE AFFAIR AT OTAKI. ALLEGED THEFT FROM A CHINESE. The hearing of tho chargo against a young man namod Alfred Jas. Cook of having at Otaki robbed a Chinaman named Charley Ah How of £4 and assaulted him was tihen continued. i Mr. Myers appeared for the Crown, and Mr. Wilford for the defence. The case for the Crown was that on the night in question prisoner was in tho com'pany -'of three otb«r young men named Quill, M'Callum, and Lay. As they were walking along tho prosecutor'overtook thorn. ' Prisoner, it was alleged, caught hold of the Chinaman, put his hand m his pocket, took his money and ran away. When prisoner rejoiiied his companions he said: "Don't say anything about it." It was not suggested by tho Crown that anything in-the nature of real violence had been used towards the Chinaman. On behalf of the defehoe it was contended that prisoner mistook the Chinfcman for a Native friend with whom he had an appointment. Witnesses, were called to show that .the Chinaman had told different versions of' the affair. Upon the hearing being; resumed yesterday Mr. Myers cross-examined tho prisoner. ■ When did you know that you were, mistaken?—"As soon as I touohed Mm,he said: 'Wha' for Maori.' " If you were perfectly innooent why didn't you tell the constable that that was so?— "I did so." Well, why did you tell him untruths P— "Just to save myself." Southey, Fowler, secretary of the Horowhenua Rugby Union, stated that prisoner was a prominent football player in nis district. He was of a somewhat excitable nature, but was known for his good behaviour. The jury ; whioh retired at 11.40, returned at 12.26 with a verdict of "not guilty," and the prisoner was immediately discharged. ALLEGED THEFT OF MONEY 1 . Frederick Armitage was charged with having, on April: .1, stolen'five one-pound notes, and four cheques j of a total value of ,£43, from the person of John Nelson. ( Mr. Webb i defended the prisoner, who pleaded "not guilty." .It appeared from the evidence of prosecutor that, on the night in : question, accused was at his place, where they consumed several , bottles of ale; When/ prosecutor retired to bed at 8 o'clock, the accused went homo. Next morning prosecutor found that his pocket-book and . the money in question wero missing. He accused prisoner of tho crimo/but all knowledge of it was denied.
